.................................................................

The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.

FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.

I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

Thanks ever so much for pinging me. I seldom get here before evening and, by then, y'all are gone on your merry ways. So I wander thru enjoying the poetry, loving the music, giggling at the gifs, LOL at the jokes and just generally enjoying the atmosphere. No flamers here....I LOVE that!

I really liked this Autumn poem. Our desert doesn't seem to realize that it is that time of year yet. The days are still hot but at least my lilac has the decency to let her leaves start turning brown.

Catch ya later (if I'm lucky - and early).

Happy Friday, everyone! Good to see you all.

She walks in Beauty

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impair'd the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

----Lord Byron.

Oh.....that's one of my favorites. In fact, I like almost everything by Lord Byron. :-)

What a pretty fox graphic too.

Happy FRiday to you, Victoria. Have a nice weekend.

Hi there, OK.

Hope you haven't left. I've been busy today and need to go back and read all the posts that I've missed.
Here in California, we don't know what Autumn is either. It did get a little windy today but the temps have been in the low to mid 80's. It should start to cool off here by the end of the month but nothing chilly until mid November or December.

Hope you have a chance to stop by often.

Autumn
by Ginger Strivelli

Jack-in-the-Green isn't looking so green anymore
He's turning gold, and crimson, and orange, and what's more,
His leaves are falling away like the gray hair of a little old man,
Falling ever faster as the west wind does blow like a fan,
Only His hair is bright in His old age,
He is a silent but merry and colorful old sage.
His whiskers are turning pumpkin with a hint of squash, and a bit of apple.
But He's still the Green Man God to all Pagan people.
He'll be bare headed soon to welcome His brother, Jack Frost.
Who will be returning again, He was never lost,
So Jack-in-the-Green sits on His throne with His green all but gone, Laughing at His own miscolored leaves and smiling on,
For He knows He'll be all the greener when old Jack Frost runs off again in the spring.
And 'wearing o' the green' will be the song His happy worshippers will again sing.

One day a man went to an auction. While there, he bid on a parrot.

He really wanted this bird, so he got caught up in the bidding. He kept on bidding, but kept getting outbid, so he bid higher and higher and higher. Finally, after he bid way more than he intended, he won the bid - the parrot was his at last!

As he was paying for the parrot, he said to the Auctioneer, "I sure hope this parrot can talk. I would hate to have paid this much for it, only to find out that he can't talk!"

"Don't worry." said the Auctioneer, "He can talk. Who do you think kept bidding against you?"

Is anyone looking for a week-end project? Well .... I've found one!!! Don't forget to invite me over when it's ready.

“Yule Gibbons” Honey Lager
(5 Gallon Batch Size)

2# Muntons Amber Dry Malt Extract
3.3# can Black Rock Dark Liquid Malt Extract
3/4 # Crystal Malt
1/3 # Black Patent Malt
1-1/2 ounce Cascade Hops (Flavor)
1/2 ounce Hallertauer Hops (Aroma)
2# Light Clover Honey
1 ounce Spruce Essence (or 10 ounces fresh growth spruce needles)
1/2 tsp Irish Moss
14 grams Superior Lager Yeast

Place cracked whole grains in a strainer bag in 6 quarts of water. Slowly bring water to a boil, removing the grains when boiling commences.
Squeeze out as much of the liquid from the spent grains as possible. Add malt extracts, honey, and flavor hops and continue boil for 45 minutes.
Add the irish moss with 15 minutes remaining.
Add the spruce essence and the aroma hops with 3 minutes remaining. (Note: if you used fresh clippings, boil the clippings in a separate pot with 1 quart of water for 30 minutes to extract the spruce oils.
Simmer for another 30 minutes, then use resulting syrup in place of the spruce essence).
Strain into fermenter with 3 gallons pre-chilled water.
Hydrate yeast for 15 minutes in 1 pint of pre-boiled water.
Pitch when wort temperature falls below 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Bottle in 8 to 10 days, priming with 1-1/2 cups of pre-boiled pure honey.

O.G. 1.056
F.G. 1.015
