.................................................................

The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.

FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.

I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

A small Drek I wrote about broken hearts and lost love.
(Hmm.. I think I just coined a new usage of 'drek')

A broken note of a dream long gone
The faded promises of a love long ago betrayed
It used to be that she dreamed of me
But I no longer float in her dreamscape sky.
She's all I still see
And I cannot hide the tears in my eyes.
Somehow it all fell apart
Wanted us to be together again
Somewhere the road was lost
And we wander in the mist in silence
And it's all a memory floating on the dust
Was I too hard to hold?
Was I a thorn of ice to you?
Pleasing to see but never meant to belong?
Did the song in the night turn to shrieks of rage?
How did it all end like this
Silence where once we laughed
A chilly step where there was once a path
I think of what was so often
And I wish there was more to see
The pain inside is so cruelly killing me
But I've drifted to the dark side of me.
And sing the broken notes from a dream long gone.

I wrote that sometime last year or so.
*head scratch*
Wish I could find my little notepad with a happier one in it.
But that notepad seems to have run off.

A bartender is sitting behind the bar on a typical day, when the door bursts open and in come four exuberant blondes. They come up to the bar, order five bottles of champagne and ten glasses, take their order over and sit down at a large table.

The corks are popped, the glasses are filled and they begin toasting and chanting, "51 days, 51 days, 51 days!"

Soon, three more blondes arrive, take up their drinks and the chanting grows. "51 days, 51 days, 51 days!"

Two more blondes show up and soon their voices are joined in raising the roof. "51 days, 51 days, 51 days!"

Finally, the tenth blonde comes in with a picture under her arm. She walks over to the table, sets the picture in the middle and the table erupts. Up jumps the others, they begin dancing around the table, exchanging high-fives, all the while chanting "51 days, 51 days, 51 days!"

The bartender can't contain his curiosity any longer, so he walks over to the table. There in the center is a beautifully framed children's jigsaw puzzle. When the frenzy dies down a little bit, the bartender asks one of the blondes, "What's all the chanting and celebration about?"

The blonde who brought in the picture explains, "Everyone thinks that blondes are dumb and they make fun of us. So, we decided to set the record straight. Ten of us got together, bought that puzzle and put it together.

"The side of the box said 2 to 4 years, but we put it together in 51 days!"

A man was driving down a quiet country lane when out into the road strayed a rooster.

Whack! The rooster disappeared under the car in a cloud of feathers. Shaken, the man pulled over at the farmhouse and rang the doorbell. A farmer appeared.

The man somewhat nervously said, "I think I killed your rooster, please allow me to replace him."

"Suit yourself," the farmer replied, "the hens are round the back."

Uh oh, I'm tellin'.
You 'killed' the thread.
And when the thread is dead...
..the furniture comes to LIFE!

*Fearfully looks over his shoulder in time to be flying tackled by the lounger*
Aaaaaaaaaaugh! Not agaiin!
*wrestled to the ground. Screen fuzzies, then blacks out.*

The DINNER PARTY

When the food began to run out
I didn't know what to do.
Dessert was deserting the table
& hot dogs went looking for cool cats.

Chicken drumsticks gathered in the garage
Where they formed a band
With meat loaf & rock melons
As mashed potato danced in the mosh pit.

A gang of Lebanese cucumbers
Was beating up the Turkish delights.
Fried rice played soccer with prawn balls,
With chicken cacciatore as goalkeeper.

BBQ lamb chops sat by the open fire
Playing poker with chips
As cheese sat around the chess board
& felafel rolled dice playing backgammon.

Donna kebab was flirting with sweet corn
In the hallway behind the bookcase
While pies with sauce spied on them
& the chocolate frogs sat around reading Harry Potter.

I rang the bell
& my food came running back into the kitchen,
but I was finding it very hard to digest
that my dinner was having a party
so I thought what the heck
& just joined right in.

Tomato and Basil Scones

Savoury scones are delicious served with a good flavoursome cheese.

Makes 14

Self raising flour - 275g (10 oz)
Salt - ¼ tsp
Butter - 50g (2 oz)
Dried basil - 1 tsp
Tomato purée - 1 tbsp
Milk - 150 ml (¼ pint)
Sesame seeds

METHOD

Place flour and salt in a bowl. Rub butter into flour until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in basil. Add tomato purée and milk to the flour and mix to a soft, but not sticky dough.

Place on a greased baking sheet and brush tops with milk and sprinkle with sesame seeds and bake at 230 °C / 450 °F / Gas 8 for 10 minutes or until well risen and golden.

Your friendship is special

Like the flowers that bloom,
Or when a butterfly emerges
From within its cocoon...

You remind me of that butterfly,
Loving and free,
Bright and colorful,
For the world to see...

We will share sunshine and rainbows;
Sometimes, the rain and the snow;
We'll stand together through it,
While the cold winds blow...

When the time is right,
We won't stop to ask "Why?"
Our friendship will take flight
On the wings of a butterfly

One of my favorite Robert Frost poems ended with "good fences make good neighbors". I read it at an oral interp. class in college (MANY years ago!) I may have to try to find it (or you might have it at your fingertips hint hint!)
