The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…
Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
The Road Goes Ever On
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Whew! Glad you got it figured out!
Did you realize you'd made a mistake? Did your blood turn to ice water? I've had that feeling before...realized I made a mistake and starting with my face, my blood just freezes!
I hate it when that happens...

Isn't Tolkien in print saying that Tom was the spirit of the Oxfordshire countryside?

I'll rummage around and see if I can find the articleHere it is!
While the article is an interesting read, I don't think Tolkien ever intended that Tom was really Aule!
To: ksen
That article is like 7 pages long. Are you sure you want to post it?

Oh good. you did better. The link.
I am with you Bear. I don't agree with this assessment that Bombadil is Aule. My first choice of opinions is that he is Vala, but not one of the 14. I think he's one of a large group never named.

Hey, saw your post of Steve's cake...my kids favorite is a homemade icecream cake. Crumbled up oreo mixed with a little melted butter pressed into the bottom of a springform pan. Freeze for an hour. 1/2 a carton of icecream (sliced about an inch thick and pieced together to make it even) some chopped up candybar...your favorite kind...the other 1/2 of the icecream (i use vanilla. ) Freeze overnight. Flip upside down and release the springform pan...put whipped cream all over the top(i use the can) and add your favorite sprinkle.
mmmm icecream cake...

Sam; just finished up "the hundred days" and "the wine dark sea" is next "in the que". enjoyable series.
Wneighbor; hobbies-bows and black powder-both are big on clutter. Got four bows "in process" with that many staves waiting not to mention the arrows.

Bombadil isn't Aule... I don't think Tolkien, as a good Catholic, would ever have attempted to put a character who is, well, God the Father, into his story.

hobbies-bows and black powder-both are big on clutter. It seems like the only hobby I have that isn't big on clutter is reading. And yet, if you call shelves and shelves of books clutter.............

Hi Jen.
I have been meaning to tell you that I think JFK was not a great president, and that his cult status annoys me too, to the extent that I think about it.
I was 14, I think, at the time of his assassination, and I remember very well that he was given cult status almost immediately, all sorts of things got named after him right away. Even though I was just a teenager, I really wondered why everyone was calling him a great president, because even though my dad had told me that JFK was "working out pretty well," I didn't see how (and still don't) he had achieved "great" status yet.
My opinion is that this all came more from the fact that, when shot, he was young, and had a (fairly) pretty wife with an exotic French name. Anyhow, I think the psychology involved is much the same as that which causes so many folks to pin so much emotion on Diana and her story.

Tauntings by deer? Oh, of all the indignities... they deserve what's coming to them.
To: Wneighbor
I have indeed seen those things!!! Very good!!!

wn; naw, books ain't clutter, I prefer to think of it as insulation that you can read.
scott; good pic of a two-fer; it helps with continuity making Legolas ambidextrous.
