The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…

Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

The Road Goes Ever On…

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Clare and I love the part where they come through the hole in the roof of that giant cavern while the wonderful music from the soundtrack is playing. Until you see them falling from far away, you don't realize just how HUGH that cavern really is!! I'll just have to do the slow-mo thing next time!!

The way they lit up the cavern, it reminded me of a meteror entering the atmosphere. Vey impressive.

Assuming they're falling at a terminal velocity of 120mph, one could time the fall from the top of the cavern to the water, and get an estimate of the height of the cavern.

Hullo Suzi! Hi all!

Monday is finally over. I'm very tired but I feel like I got something done today, between work and school. Now, one page to type and then I'm semi-free for the evening!

Somebody said that the whole falling sequence, if at terminal velocity, went further than 15 miles judging by time passed.

I haven't done the math myself, and don't care to try my hand at it at the moment, but I really like the sequence and have only a secondary background interest in the distance traveled.

It is quite an impressive sequence.
Hopefully, the Samwise versus Gollum and then Shelob sequence will be just as pumped.
If they kept it at all due to time constraints.

So what exactly WAS it you was teachin them girls, Wn?

She's referring back to a time when I was teaching outdoor survival skills.... to teenagers. One year, there were 2 boys about 14 that were heck. We'd been out for 3 days; me, another leader, 5 boys ages 13 and 14 and Jill and Dana. Jill and Dana were the best 2 kids that I ever taught in all the years I taught those courses.

So, that one year, it rained intermittently the whole time we were out. These 2 - 14 year old boys were horrid. The last morning they were really screwing with me. So, I tied them together to a tree. And I have never lived that down. But, they quit messing with me for the rest of the time we were there.

I coulda really got in a lot of trouble for that. But, they really had it coming.

Saranwrap can hold a 175 pound man about ten foot up a tree with about twenty to thirty passes.
Don't ask how I know that.

Anyway, I don't remember him nagging her anymore, so it must have done some good. She laughed about it later! I just can't stand to hear that kind of verbal abuse.

See! I was right! From what I hear nobody has ever heard Jason say things like that to Dana again!!!

I like you. Yes, I do.

Wish I'd have had some Saran wrap for them 2 boys.

And that was during my happy days when I'd go out and teach those classes with a coupla canteens of Jack Daniels. I was ALWAYS in a good mood and they were so bad they messed that up!

My brother and I kinda, err, built a huge pit once.
Somewhat of a Malaysian tiger trap minus the punjee sticks.
We even covered it over neatly and it looked like normal solid ground.

Until Mr. Shotter was poaching dear in our backyard and found said pit.
I'm still not sure how the skunk got in there with him, but the effect was appreciable.

I also made an old style sling shot ala David vs Goliath.
I wound up with a golf ball in the pouch and let fly.
The golf ball hummed and did a strange wobbling flight that curved somewhat left, and bounced off some guy's head.
Why he was sitting in the middle of a swamp on the peninsula like that I have no clue, but he did wobble around impressively before screaming his head off.

We were bad kids.
Amazing we're still in one piece after all these years.

Re: Takes on Brame...

Hair: I don't agree that it is necessary to sanctify Crystal in order to demonize Brame. He snapped. He lost it. He killed her and himself in front of the kids. That makes him a *bad* person without question. BUT: She was a total raving nutball. She was not some kind of saint-candidate. No... that's not a capital offense to be a nutball. He was unforgivably wrong. But that should be the end of it.

To think for even a minute that she was some kind of totally innocent party that was totally blindsided *because* the city withheld information about his instability from her and her family... is ludicrous. Holding the city responsible for not seeing this coming, is laughable.

Hell... *Crystal* didn't see it coming. SHE FOLLOWED HIM into the parking lot in order to confront him. If she didn't think he was imminently dangerous, how exactly was his employer supposed to know?

Crystal, with the help of private investigators and informants, was amassing a file of allegations of abuse (some of which was ridiculous) and infidelity and even charges of rape and other abuse-of-position (though none of that was never actually established with any credibility).

But the question is... since Washington is a no-fault divorce state... why was she collecting all this information? She wouldn't have needed any of it if all she wanted was a divorce. Well, the answer is that according to some of her friends she was intent on not just getting a divorce, but destroying him completely. She had some personal need to not just get rid of him, but to ruin him for life. She was going to see to it that he was not only never going to see the kids again but he would going to prison if possible. Life behind bars for a former chief of police is a particularly unpleasant experience.

Don't get me wrong: I would never in any way excuse what he did. None of this is an excuse. It was hideously and unforgivably wrong.

But for Crystal's family to NOW come back and blame the city for not anticipating that he would break under the pressure when SHE HERSELF didn't see far enough ahead to predict that confronting him with a "gotcha" in the parking lot was going to push him over the edge... the whole thing is laughable.

Anyway... on to other topics. :-)

*pssst!*
It's called 'initiation rites'...
And the all popular camp pranks...
Not that it's been done before.
I claim innocence.
