HONEST ABE DAY

His life was what America was all about. An average boy, born on this day in 1809 on a farm in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky, was able to become the 16th President of the United States. He studied hard, by the light of a fireplace, to become first, a lawyer, then a statesman. Abraham Lincoln, one of the most revered U.S. Presidents, served his country during one of the most turbulent times in its history. The term of his presidency (1861-1865) encompassed the Civil War between the States. His Emancipation Proclamation made on January 1, 1863 to free slaves; and his Gettysburg Address given on November 19, 1863 at the site of one of the most famous battlegrounds of the Civil War are still held high as classic statements of democratic beliefs and goals. President Lincoln was also responsible for one of the most popular holidays in the U.S.: Thanksgiving Day. He proclaimed that the last Thursday of November shall be observed as such. And so it was, and still is. Abraham Lincoln lived during tragic times and died a tragic death. While watching a performance of Our American Cousin at Washingtons Ford Theatre, he was shot by John Wilkes Booth and died a few hours later. Lincoln was the first U.S. President to be assassinated. Honest Abe earned his nickname when he was practicing law in Illinois. It was his unfailing honesty that made him known throughout the state. When convinced that his client was right, he could argue the case strongly. If not convinced, he was hardly powerful in his clients defense. Lincoln would persuade clients to settle out of court even though that meant he would receive a lesser fee. And, when this was not possible, he could argue a case equally as well before a judge or before an uneducated jury. To Abe Lincoln, being a lawyer or President meant seeking the truth for client or for country.

I knew you were Methodist and often wondered how you stomached it. I know that in some regions the Methodists are more conservative than in others, but as a whole they're just about on the end of the spectrum.
We used to be PCUSA (we're still members) and it was kind of like that. The denomination headquarters was a bastion of liberal whackos, but some churches were very conservative and orthodox.

I just don't understand why any one who want's to support our country and defend our way of life and our loved ones should be branded as bad Catholics or bad Protestants.

Here is what I think happened. Back in the Viet Nam days, you could get a deferment if you were in divinity school. I think a whole bunch of peaceniks went that route, rather than Canada.
Years have passed, and now those same people are in the upper reaches of their churches. They still think like it is 1968.
President Bush should give a tax break to folks who want to go to divinity school. I bet we could get more conservatives that way. HA!
To: Pippin
I think it parallels what has happened in our government. Conservatives tend to be greatly under-represented because we are not activists and tend to want things to go on as they always have. "Cottage conservatives" is one term I've heard for people who are conservative, but apolitical.
Liberals see the world as a very racist, sexist, homophobic and unjust place, a place that needs them to transform it.
Ironically they tend to think of themselves as lonely soldiers, bravely fighting alone against a whole world that opposes them. but in reality they are adept at using power structures and are vastly overrepresented.
Saint Francis would shudder at their methods.

The Betrayal of the Church: apostasy and renewal in the mainline denominations I'm sure I've mentioned this book to you before, but it's worth mentioning here. The author is a UMC evangelist who does an excellent job of documenting the marriage between the political left and church leadership, especially in the World Council of Churches and its member denominations (including the Catholic Church). Unfortunately the book was published in 1986 and so has nothing to say about what has happened since then. Perhaps there's another book out there with a more current perspective.

The word PANIC designed to cause alarm.......we are being told to prepare, much as people in hurricane alley or earthquake prone areas prepare. This is not PANIC but prudent.

I agree 100% with you....the media will twist it to make the administration look as hysterical as they can.
I heard some former FBI Dipwad on with IMUS this morning...laughing at the suggestions the Director was giving the other day....they make me puke.

Well I liked what you did much better than what I did. I had to get gas, the gas thingy was broken off, so I had to stand in the wind and pump my gas. Windchill 39. Of course I didn't bring my coat.

I'm supposed to be working ..... hope the boss doesn't catch me FReeping ....... *grins*
We have just left the Methodist Church because it keeps going farther and farther to the left. Actually it has taken liberal positions for quite a few years but our church in the small town we lived in for so long was basically conservative in outlook, though, being the only Methodist Church in town, we had a few liberals, who mostly hid out under the rocks.
Since moving here, though, we have been unable to find a local church that met our spiritual needs and can no longer stomach the positions of the national church. We are so pleased that we made the change.
But for years hubby and I wondered why the national church was so danged liberal when we didn't really believe that it reflected the views of the majority of church members. Though I am sure there are other reasons also, one conclusion we reached was that conservatives tend to have jobs, families, and responsibilities. It is difficult for them to get away to attend the conferences where the policies are set. Thus it is the liberals who are making decisions on policy statements, changes to the Discipline, etc.
Even in our small church, the delegates to Conference tended to be the more liberal members ....... the rest of us couldn't leave jobs or family long enough to attend.
Is this a matter of our letting liberalism take over by standing by and doing nothing? Probably. Now I suspect things are too far gone for significant change .... at least for years and years and years ........ *sigh*
In the meantime, if the mainstream churches wonder why they are losing members, they should look closely in the mirror. While they spend more time on social issues than on spiritual matters and while they care more about making people feel good than presenting the Word of God, they are going to continue to lose members.

Kay, you have a small Freepmail :)
I've been away all day......and need to leave again.
You make some good points in your last post....
...but I haven't found in the PCA Presbyterian Church a lack of time, interest or zeal to pursue conservative ideas.
On the contrary, it has been my experience to learn from others in the church that I can (and should) unite my Christian walk with effecting good change in our world.
It was always my choice to get involved or not, but our church has not shied away from taking a stand against abortion.....and other liberal ideas.
We have a strong church discipline--(& hierarchical decisions)-- in effect that governs what our church will or will not condone.
We make time to get involved!

Haven't seen or heard anything about it either here or on Rush. The only thing Drudge has is a story about SAM launchers being positioned around DC:
