The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I had a few guy friends in high school, four of them. They were the ones that would dance with me, joke around, just friendly guys.

Three of the four were killed by a drunk, the fourth survived (it was his car) but was never really the same, was out of school for months. I went to three funerals in one day.

g'nad, you kinda remind me of them. Friendly, nice and outgoing...they were good people. They made high school bearable for me.

I completely understand where you've been. I've been there too and it was not a happy time.

My parents put me in a childrens home for troubled teens where I saw and heard horrible things from "Christian" folks. My sister and I didn't get out until 9 months later because my parents had signed custody of us over to them. The stories we could tell you...

If not for the Redeeming Grace of God, I may have sworn off ANY type of religion/belief for the rest of my life.

I had originally planned to do the trip to Big Bend National Park, where the geology is fitting for the subject and there are fun daytrips into Mexico on burros and stuff.

Hey, I'm planning on Big Bend at Christmas break, if Frodo needs to see the Chisos I could take him. Up to Emory Peak even.

For me, it was about keeping score in the 'the best revenge is to live well' game. (And I'm living very well- muahahaa)

I was co-chair of the decorations even. But I had a "spiritual" awakening of sorts and decided dancing was wrong.

Really Corin, I know yours was a serious post, but there is something so funny about the stuff that ends up happening to us.... its a carnival!

Yeah, my mom and dad signed me over to a home too. Which was why I decided I was an atheist for about 12 years. Better to have no God than that god.

No, AOG is not a cult.

A cult is where you're considered "backslidden" if you don't show up every Saturday to mow the preacher's lawn... Or where you're told a famine is coming and you stock up a five year supply of grain and dried foods (borrowing of course to pay for it)...or where you take two trips to Israel within six months (borrowing of course to pay for it) and your annual salary was under $10,000...or the church where you're robbing from God if you're "tithing" less than 30%...

It has taken me YEARS to get over everything I went thru there. But it was the "family" church, started by my uncle in the 20s. And it was the Pastor who preached my dad's funeral.

Lots of baggage. I've been back once in 19 years. My step-father won't darken the door...even to the fellowship hall for family meals (my sister, another aunt and a cousin still attend there).

I eat mayo and mustard on my burger...Steve eats ketchup which I find disgusting.

I like Hellman's Mayo! I discovered a scrumptious Cranberry Mustard at Trader Joe's and I use that instead of ketchup and mustard on burgers or chicken sandwiches! Ketchup is for fries!!

Okay, I'm readin' through trying to catch up on the 400 posts this morning and I come across this:

It stayed hot here till late last night.

And all I got to say is - what goes on in the backgammon room, needs to stay in the backgammon room.

AG is very similar to S. Baptist in a lot of ways...my family is largely AG. I always say AG is just Baptists with pep!

One of the best worship services I've ever experienced was a combined S. Baptist/Assembly of God worship! It was GREAT!
