The Guild 12-07-2002 Past White House Christmas Cards
The White House ^

Posted on 12/07/2002 6:37:48 AM PST by BigWaveBetty

Written on White House stationary in his own hand in 1927, President Calvin Coolidge issued the first official Christmas message to the American people. As a response to numerous requests for the President to send a holiday greeting, President Coolidge asked newspapers across the United States to publish his holiday greeting to the American people. Although he didn't speak, he participated in the first ceremonial tree lighting for the event now known as the Pageant of Peace.

President Eisenhower expanded the list of Presidential Christmas cards recipients significantly in 1953; the President sent season’s greetings to American ambassadors abroad, members of the Cabinet and Congress, foreign heads of state and government officials. Thereafter, the official Presidential Holiday Greeting was the White House Christmas card.

Artist Adrian Martinez of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, designed the 2001 holiday card which features the Second Floor Corridor of the White House with Mary Cassatt's 1908 painting, Young Mother and Two Children. Mrs. Bush selected the Psalm for the card on September 16. At Camp David, the chaplain based his sermon on the Psalm, which was outlined in the lectionary for that September Sunday.

2001 White House Tree

The President and Mrs. Bush stand next to the 2001 tree, an 18-foot Concolor fir that was grown in the mountains of Central Pennsylvania. For ornaments, artists from all 50 states and the District of Columbia designed miniature replicas of historic houses from their regions.

What office are you considering? A Statehouse seat or a Congressional one?

When will your name be on the ballot?

You'd better get your "life" in order. Clean your closets, clean your cupboards and get ready to say goodbye to the "real world". You won't have much time to yourself once you make a solid commitment. And if you win, it will get worse.

Lower your housekeeping standards. Teach your husband to cook and do laundry,,, if he doesn't know his way around the supermarket,,, he's gonna have to learn,,, or starve.

Oh, and by the way, I'm glad you've decided to take the leap.

I believe I'm being realistic about the possibility of success (not great), but still think it's necessary to get Repubs on the ballot, just to let the Dems around here know that they can't coast on their party affiliation alone. According to the chairman of the state party, we're going all out this year to watch the legislators and how they vote, so that they might be held accountable come election day.

And now for the really pathetic news (vomitus alert):

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (Reuters) -- Former first feline Socks the cat, the ultimate insider of two Clinton administrations, will return home to Arkansas for the first time since leaving the White House and be honored in a parade through the state's capital, organizers said Friday.

Socks will be the grand marshal of the annual Little Rock Christmas parade Saturday. [So glad to see they appreciate the real meaning of Christmas in Little Rock.] The 11-year-old cat will lead the parade and ride aboard a vintage 1967 Ford Mustang convertible owned by former President Bill Clinton. [Bet he hasn't paid his property tax on it]

It will mark the first return to Arkansas in about 10 years for the stray cat adopted by the Clinton family. Holding Socks in the parade will be Jackye Parker, principal of a Little Rock elementary school named for Clinton, [Would you send a child to that school?] and some of the school's students.

Socks, so named by Chelsea Clinton in recognition of his four white paws, is an otherwise coal black cat adopted by the former president's daughter in 1991, while her father was still governor of Arkansas. When Clinton won the presidency in 1992, Socks, by then a celebrity, moved to the White House with the family.

When Clinton's eight-year tenure as president ended, he and his wife, Hillary, moved to New York, [More or less, considering neither one actually lives there] from where the former first lady won a seat in the U.S. Senate. Chelsea Clinton, now studying at Oxford University in England, entrusted Socks to her father's White House secretary, Betty Currie of Washington, who is accompanying the cat to Little Rock.

"It will be quite a homecoming for Socks," said Linda Caillouet of the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau. "He has probably missed Arkansas terribly." source

I know, I know! Fortunately, Mr. M already does laundry. I'll probably be bending your ear in coming months as I plunge into this (it's a house of delegates seat).

I can't remember what state you're in....

Start watching for an opportunity to attend a GOPAC campaign school. They are the best.

Don't count on your state party to monitor the incumbant's votes,,,,, so it yourself. They have so many folks to keep track of,, sometimes things get lost in the fray. Don't depend on anyone for anything,,,, plan to do it yourself,,, if volunteers show up to help, so much the better, but figure out a way to get the necessary stuff done without them.

Let us know when it's time to write checks. I believe that any conservative candidate should take money from any patriot that is interested in taking back any of the various governments run by tax and piss it away dim/libs.

Couldn't you have made the seal a little bigger?
:)

MOUNTAINEER: Go, girl, go! I hope you'll do this...I'm counting on you to take over the ole Byrd's seat in the not too distant future.

Thanks, JL, for your offer of support! IG - I'm in West Virginia, home of Robert C. Byrd, Democrats and lots of vacant storefronts. I appreciate what you said about doing things myself, because that's really the way I'd prefer to go and there are so very few Republicans here to volunteer, anyway. Of course, I'll take advantage of whatever help I can get.

Put a piece of paper and pencil on your counter. Start making a list. Keep it handy where you can add to it easily without rumaging around to find it.

Your list will include:

1) All the different organizations you have participated in in the last 10 years. This includes church, choir, service organizations, social organizations, women from the gym, people you sat on the bleachers with when your kids were playing ball, people who's kids went to dance class with your kid,,,, you get the idea. Leave no stone unturned in this area.

2) Names of WOMEN who you can ask to help you (at this point, party isn't important,,, whether we like it or not, Gender Matters)

3) Try to come up with 5 Women's names from each organization.

Are your kids living locally? Start helping in the Concession stand at your Grandkid's T-ball games when their parent's turn comes up. (You'll get to know the younger crowd this way, and it demonstrates you're willing to do the dirty work)

Go to local meetings. Ask Questions,,, but don't give opinions,, just establish yourself as someone who is willing to dig down deep for the answers.

When you see the people on the list, stop to chat a minute, when they say, "What are you up to these days?",, tell them you're giving some thought to running. Tell them how difficut it is for a woman to run for office, and how difficult it is to get people to jump on board to assist a woman to run for office. When they say, "Well, I'll help you",,, you write it down on an index card and put it in the new recipe box I forgot to tell you to get for this purpose.

Get the list started tonite. There is no time to waste.

What is up with only the pubbie women doing all the scut work? The two local campaigns I've really been involved with with, I was surrounded by ladies. Maybe the men have jobs or something going on, but the volunteers were 98% of the feminine persuasion.

Is this a universal phenomenon?

Women don't do all the work. Men help, too. But there are more women around during the daylight hours. And, women don't flinch at doing the menial tasks that must be done altho the task seems insignifigant.

The higher the level of office being attempted, the more likely there are men volunteering.

In a campaign where a woman is the candidate it is important to get some highly visable men involved (but this comes later,,, I've been giving instructions on lining up the 'Worker Bees'). Nothing will be accomplished without a list of reliable worker bees.

I thought you guys would enjoy this:

posted 12/1/02 to the WoodenBoat Forum: "Decided to take a short drive down to Sesuit Harbor here on Cape Cod. Crystal clear, about 35 degrees out with the wind blowing NW at 35-40 mph. I never expected to see any boats out today, but there was Senator Kennedy's Schooner MYA trying to come into the harbor in rough seas with just the jib up. As they approached the two jetties that line the entrance to this Cape Cod Bayside harbor, the trailing NW wind blew them away from the jetties and right up onto the shallow flats. Hard aground, beam onto the seas, she started to take waves over the side. She went aground about 3:00pm and as dark started to set in, it was apparent that she's not going anywhere for awhile. Both POB's (the Senator wasn't on board)were able to wade ashore in the cold water and are safe, but I'm not so sure the boat is. The MYA is a beautiful, German built wooden boat that winters in Sesuit Harbor and I guess this was her annual trip from Hyannisport to Dennis. Really felt helpless to see her taking that pounding. The things you see when you don't have a camera or video!"

The boat did suffer some damage but was successfully pulled off. The skipper is one of the best and just had an unlucky time of it. No one was injured altho the two aboard had to jump into the water and walk inland for assistance.

Can I put in my two cents? I would love to give you all the help and advice that I can. Having just gone through a campaign I figured out a bunch of stuff.

You need MONEY, and lots of it. Lots and lots and lots.

You need backing and volunteers.

You need a solid message.

I am really good friends with the president of the Susan B Anthony Foundation. It's the republican woman's group that helps republican women candidates.I will put you in touch with Jane Abraham, the wife of Spence Abraham, the Sec. of Energy. She will be happy to help you through the foundation.

Almost all the money for women canidates comes from liberal groups, so you won't see a dime of it. That's the super frustrating part, all that money available, but you can't get your hands on it if you are conservative.

If you need anything just holler, I just went through a year of this and I would love to help. You will be a great candidate. I have faith in you and everyone here who can support you.
