AMERICA - The Right Way!! (Day 684) [Remember the Trade Center!!]
Various News Sources and FReepers | December 5, 2002 | All of Us

Posted on 12/05/2002 4:35:35 AM PST by Chairman_December_19th_Society

We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail! [President Bush]

Good morning!! Do not let the victims of the attacks on New York and Washington, nor the brave members of our Nation's military who have given their lives to protect our freedom, die in vain!!

WINTER STORM #2 - UPDATE

...SNOW IS FALLING AT A MODERATE RATE ACROSS VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND

Overnight totals at the cottage are about 3", though this has not been measured yet. The current QPF says there is another 0.5 inches of precipitable water availble from 7 AM this morning through 3 AM tomorrow morning.

The event total estimate is now 8" for the area based on the QPF. That is still a 3-roll event. NWS forecasts call for as much as 10", if it appears that total will be met, then the designation will change to a 4-roller.

In the news:

Iraq has accused the weapons inspectors of being spies for the United States and Israel and has condemmed the inspection of one of the Presidential Palaces.

The United States will compare Iraq's weapons list, if they have one - Iraq is quoted in this morning's news as still saying they have no WMDs - against its own data, and is prepared to cite Iraq for a breach.

The United States is preparing to call up reserves in the event of a war with Iraq.

A US District Judge ruled that Jose Padilla, being held in the brig as an enemy combatant, does fall under the purvue of the Federal court system, insofar as to whether the Government made a correct determination of his status. [EDITORIAL NOTE: This is so bogus - it has got to be overturned!! It throws the whole ability of a Nation to capture the enemy out of whack!!]

And Strom Thurmond has turned 100 today.

For AMERICA - The Right Way, I remain yours in the Cause, the Chairman.

Wow. Conn is a long ways from Utah. You might want to check gun laws between the two states if that matters to you. Good luck on whatever you decide to do.

Thanks for the St. Nicholas greeting.

Girlchild's St. Nick package was mailed last week. Boychild #2 will receive a care package from Swiss Colony from St. Nick this yer. And boychild #1 (living at home) will have a sock full of treats in the morning.:)

I don't care how old they are, they're still my babies.:) :) :)

What exactly is a dulcimer? Sorry to ask a dumb question, but maybe I missed that day at school. ;>)

I bought my dulcimer 17 years ago, but hardly played it at all for the first 8-9 years. It's a very simple instrument to play if you play the way it was played traditionally.

Later I attended a dulcimer festival and a 16-year-old girl taught me 4 chords. I haven't really expanded much from there, but those 4 chords are enough to keep me going on a lot of songs. I play melody on the harmonica and do chords on the dulcimer.

I wish I had a little music theory, but I have a feeling that the way my brain works and the way music is usually taught just don't mix too well. For instance, I can't stand looking at round dots on lines. But show me some numbers and I will take to it like a duck to water.

"since I already knew what stuff like mesophylic lactobacillus is."

Let me know if & when you study campylobacter jejuni. I can give you some personal testimony.:(

campylobacter jejuni

Already done that. 2-5 day incubation period, 7-10 days duration, sources may be unpasturized dairy products, chicken, pork, beef, lamb or water, it is NOT a spore former, and is actually an infection, not an intoxication or toxin-mediated infection.

And that's ALL I want to know about it. ;>)

Mesophylic lactobacillus is a good bug. Actually, it should be the state microbe of Wisconson, what with all the cheese and curds and all.

State microbe....LOL! Don't suggest it to our state legislature. They waste WAY more time than necesary naming state thisses and thats.

You really DON't want to know any more about camp., trust me.:) Suffice to say that I will never again, for the rest of my days on earth, eat chicken.

"I can't stand looking at round dots on lines. But show me some numbers and I will take to it like a duck to water."

Then we are truly opposites.:)

I spend the better portion of my days looking at round dots on lines.:)

And loving it.:)

And numbers are a mystery to me.:)

You know what, though? It doesn't really matter how you GET to the music. It's what you BRING to the music that's important.

Some of the best musicians I know don't read a note. And some of the worst musicians I know read like crazy and have superb technique but they do not have the soul of a musician. That's something you can't teach. You either have it or you don't.

I would love to be able to play with other musicians for just a kind of jam session. But I have so rarely had the chance to play with others and when I have gotten together with other dulcimer players, I find that they all tune differently than me and play differently. I learned more from old books and play in the Mixolydian mode. That seems to be passe these days.

I dunno about the salamander legend. All I can tell you is that a websearch on it comes up with either restaurant suppliers or fantasy game sites. One result looked promising, but it was a "members.tripod" domain, the land of a thousand pop-ups. I didn't dare. The encyclopedia didn't help either, except for this one: "Chordata: Subphylum Vertebrata" Can't argue with that. A greeting card site (Salamander Studios - Chicago seems to have the answer for us:
Salamander Studios derives its name from the legend of the salamander. According to legend, a salamander is born from fire, becoming the guardian of the power of the flames. Through this power the salamander can regenerate its own limbs, in its noble task of defending good against evil.
You never know what you can learn on the web! Thanks for asking -- really, this kind of stuff fascinates me. I need to learn the legends and the myths. My writing advisor in college told me to read the Greeks, because they already wrote all the stories.

According to legend, a salamander is born from fire, becoming the guardian of the power of the flames.

That, exactly, was what I was talking about. Although in the piece I read (back in the early 70's?) they talked about the origin of the myth. It seems like the salamander would hang out in stacks of firewood during the European winters, and just chill. (pardon the pun) But, when the firewood was brought in, and placed in the fire-place, it would re-animate, and many were found in fireplaces.

I'm still looking for an attribution for that particular explanation.

I studied both latin and hebrew. My paternal grandfather considered me illiterate because I didn't study greek.

Oh, man, John, that's great!

I have an ongoing fight with my parents about my education. It sucked, I tell them. They don't like to hear this, because they moved to a school district that supposedly had the best public high schools in the nation and spent good money on sending me to a small, private college.

Was I taught Latin? Barely. Was I taught Greek? Wasn't even offered. Ben Franklin taught himself both.

I have a friend from Mexico who writes the most beautiful stuff I've ever seen this side of Shakespeare. Her grandfather, a frenchman, made her read St. Augustine when she was twelve.

I am worthless and weak.

Urgent Techie help needed.

I have been away for a couple of days, when I returned home, I discovered that somehow may "Even Less Computer Literate than I am" Husband, somehow managed to remove the open space at the top of the page where you can type in addresses when you want to jump from one site to another.

Does anyone know how to restore this feature? I rebooted, that didn't work. I accessed this site, just now, by going thru a Google Search.

Thank you for helping. IG
