We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail! [President Bush]
Good morning!! Do not let the victims of the attacks on New York and Washington, nor the brave members of our Nation's military who have given their lives to protect our freedom, die in vain!!

WINTER STORM #2 - UPDATE
...SNOW IS FALLING AT A MODERATE RATE ACROSS VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND
Overnight totals at the cottage are about 3", though this has not been measured yet. The current QPF says there is another 0.5 inches of precipitable water availble from 7 AM this morning through 3 AM tomorrow morning.
The event total estimate is now 8" for the area based on the QPF. That is still a 3-roll event. NWS forecasts call for as much as 10", if it appears that total will be met, then the designation will change to a 4-roller.
In the news:
Iraq has accused the weapons inspectors of being spies for the United States and Israel and has condemmed the inspection of one of the Presidential Palaces.
The United States will compare Iraq's weapons list, if they have one - Iraq is quoted in this morning's news as still saying they have no WMDs - against its own data, and is prepared to cite Iraq for a breach.
The United States is preparing to call up reserves in the event of a war with Iraq.
A US District Judge ruled that Jose Padilla, being held in the brig as an enemy combatant, does fall under the purvue of the Federal court system, insofar as to whether the Government made a correct determination of his status. [EDITORIAL NOTE: This is so bogus - it has got to be overturned!! It throws the whole ability of a Nation to capture the enemy out of whack!!]
And Strom Thurmond has turned 100 today.
For AMERICA - The Right Way, I remain yours in the Cause, the Chairman.

I would still be in Ft Collins if I hadn't come to my sences and gone back home to marry my childhood sweetheart.
I met this girl and really thought I was head over heels for her, harmones I guess, 'I saw the light' and when I got out of the service went back to the sweetest, kindest, lovingest, careing woman in the whole wide world.

I am always mystified about why people are uninterested in politics or history. My hairdresser thinks it is boring, yet she keeps track of all the people on soap operas. The Gore/Clinton/Kerry stories are better than soap operas...one would think it would get some attention! Ha!
I have a theory about history teaching. History until about the 1700's was PERSONAL history...in other words, Kings and Queens and their ministers pretty much determined what happened. This history is fairly easy to teach and is interesting. However, when history moves into the 18th century, it increasingly becomes a history of movements. Harder to follow. Books need to personalize it.
Christmas tree lighting on now, and the President is wearing his white cowboy hat!!
To: Miss Marple
Christmas tree lighting is also being covered on C-Span.
To: Miss Marple
be off for a few, gotta go and get gd at dancing.
To: Molly Pitcher
Switch to C-SPAN. Barbara Eden and Santa (played by Kenny Rogers, who is now singing Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer!
To: gulfcoast6; Miss Marple; Mr. Mulliner
You made the right decision, g6.
The lighting will be repeated on C-SPAN II at 8 ET. Just love that hat!
And someone's playing a dulcimer!
To: Neets
Take care of yourself...orders coming from Utah. :) Can you take tomorrow off and rest?
To: Miss Marple
Thanks for the description of the White House Christmas tree lighting. I'm hoping that C-Spam will replay it later on this evening when I am home...
To: *ATRW
C-SPAN is covering the whole thing. Mannheim Steamroller is now playing the Hallelujah Chorus. Hopefully this will be repeated later for those who are commuting.

#124 Yes, history is taught differently.
It used to be kinda the "great man" theory....individuals who dominated epochs....
This style has gone out of favor the past decades in favor of movements, yes, but also in favor of studying the "common man"....
Leading to dissertations on the most miniscule of topics....women & basket-making in Liege, 1790-1795 for example!!! LOL!
A little of that goes a long way.
To: Miss Marple
Thanks for the heads-up! A special treat. Especially seeing President Bush in his white cowboy hat!!!! The Dose tonight will be extra-special.

That's a fine observation that political history is no longer personal history. In the foreword to a collection of his short stories, F. Scott Fitzgerald's daughter published a diagram of the British rulers he made her memorize when she was little. He felt it was important that she keep straight all the Georges, Williams, Edwards, and etc. Who cares today?
There's some real good social history out there of the Middle Ages, and not just scholastic stuff. I'm not into it, buy my father adores it. His favorite author is Georges Dubuy.
National history is the great American innovation. We call our leader "President." When that name was decided upon in 1789, a "president" was a leader of a club. It was wholly alien that it be the name of a nation's ruler. Into the 20th Century, it was still an undecided phenomenon. What difference did it make what was the title of Hitler, Stalin or Mao? They were their countries. How ironic!
Americans are fascinated by presidential history and the personalities, yet it is always within the context of the office. Recently, an historian/writer told me I should write a full biography of WH Taft. He said Taft needs a new one and it'd be easy for me since I've already covered his presidency. I replied that only his presidency interests me. He said, yeah, but publishers pay more for full biographies, and biographies of Presidents are only interesting because they were presidents, therefore I should do a full biography of Taft. I stumbled a bit, and finally managed to follow his logic. And I decided to do not just the opposite but to take it to an extreme: my next book will be dedicated to all of six months during 1912.

If you go through Nebraska again, please don't take I-80 unless you really like that sort of topography. I always recommend, if one has the time, to go on Hwy 6 & 34. That route takes you right past that lovely big, old house that I grew up in.
I got permission to play dulcimer tomorrow at our party. The teacher who has really taken charge and taught songs and readings to the students told me today that last year he got in trouble for using "religious" songs. He told me that he is not even supposed to use the word "Christmas" and can't teach any of the songs that are specifically Christmas. The students can't figure out why they can't sing "Silent Night" and other favorites, but he just tells them, "Sorry, I'm not allowed to teach those." Grrr!
Anyway, since no one in authority told me -- and since I have only a week left at that place -- I will do "Silent Night," "Lo! How a Rose E'er Blooming," and my favorite Christmas song of all, "Good King Wenceslas."

My sister when in middle school many years ago had an excellent text which had personal glimpses of the personalities highlighted in boxs. To this day she is fond of John Calhoun and Henry Clay because of their excellently documented feud in her textbook.
I am all for personalizing history, because it makes people understand that history isn't some big machine, but it is all of us!
Three Mo' Tenors, excellent black guy singers, now doing a medley.
To: Mr. Mulliner
I love "Good King Wenceslas." It was my father's favorite carol.
To: Teacup; Molly Pitcher; Guenevere; kassie
Thanks for the compliments.
Molly , it's hard actually see, but the dog on the left is Terri (in an elf hat)...then Elsa, our shepherd, (in Mrs. Claus hat with braids)...then PB is supposed to be a reindeer. :-)
Teacup..Hubby found the cart. Someone tossed it in the canal. Who knows how many years it was there.
All this was my daughter's idea. She is the one who cut the cardboard, painted and decorated the sled.
She ordered 75 of these to be made up as Christmas postcards.
I would love to see your pictures..grandkids...pets, anything. :-)
