We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail! [President Bush]
Good morning!! Do not let the victims of the attacks on New York and Washington, nor the brave members of our Nation's military who have given their lives to protect our freedom, die in vain!!

WINTER STORM #2 - UPDATE
...SNOW IS FALLING AT A MODERATE RATE ACROSS VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND
Overnight totals at the cottage are about 3", though this has not been measured yet. The current QPF says there is another 0.5 inches of precipitable water availble from 7 AM this morning through 3 AM tomorrow morning.
The event total estimate is now 8" for the area based on the QPF. That is still a 3-roll event. NWS forecasts call for as much as 10", if it appears that total will be met, then the designation will change to a 4-roller.
In the news:
Iraq has accused the weapons inspectors of being spies for the United States and Israel and has condemmed the inspection of one of the Presidential Palaces.
The United States will compare Iraq's weapons list, if they have one - Iraq is quoted in this morning's news as still saying they have no WMDs - against its own data, and is prepared to cite Iraq for a breach.
The United States is preparing to call up reserves in the event of a war with Iraq.
A US District Judge ruled that Jose Padilla, being held in the brig as an enemy combatant, does fall under the purvue of the Federal court system, insofar as to whether the Government made a correct determination of his status. [EDITORIAL NOTE: This is so bogus - it has got to be overturned!! It throws the whole ability of a Nation to capture the enemy out of whack!!]
And Strom Thurmond has turned 100 today.
For AMERICA - The Right Way, I remain yours in the Cause, the Chairman.

I always fail to understand why those yahoos are against Christmas songs. They are historical, and back 300 or 400 years ago, the ONLY songs taught were religious in nature. If we don't teach any music that has religious connotations, we cut out a HUGE (if not not almost all) of music down through the ages. Sorry, this one hits my soapbox button (and I'm not ranting at you...) Have fun at the party tomorrow, I think it would be wonderful to hear 'Silent Night' played on a dulcimer. (And where is that wonderful tolerance that is preached by the Left? Can't they sit and listen to a Christmas song and be tolerant of the diverse beliefs. Oops, I'm ranting again.)

I was very familiar with the tune, but didn't know the words to "Good King Wenceslas" until about 10 years ago. I think the words are wonderful and tell a great story.
I know that King Wenceslas is a real king from history (Poland?) and was a Christian king, perhaps one of the first in that area.
*Sigh* Twice today I left my headlights on. The first time was this morning when I left them on for 30 minutes until another teacher came along and shut them off. But this afternoon they were left on for more like an hour and a half and the battery went dead. I had to get jumper cables to get it going again.

"Life can only be understood by looking backward, but it must be lived by looking forward".
Thats by thought for the day, have a good day and please be safe.

It's going well. My average is over 100% (because of extra credit stuff). The math and science part isn't too hard, since I already knew what stuff like mesophylic lactobacillus is.
I'm looking forward to the part where we actually get to cook. ;>)

To make up for my rant above, I will post a picture of Barney and Spot, made in sugar on the White House gingerbread house. They're so cute! I'm especially excited to see the White House gingerbread house this year, perhaps I can get some inspiration for the one I plan on making next year...

A replica of President Bush's dogs Barney, left, and Spot, right, adorn the edge of the gingerbread house, Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, as first lady Laura Bush, not shown, gave a tour of the White House decorations. The theme this year at the White House was presidential pets.

Oops. King Wenceslaus was Czech (Bohemian), not Polish. By the way, tomorrow is either the Feast of Saint Nicholas or the Feast of Stephen (mentioned in the song), not sure which.
Who was King Wenceslas anyway? Wenceslas was the Duke of Bohemia who was murdered in 929 AD by his wicked younger brother, Boleslav. As the song indicates, he was a good, honest, and strongly principled man. The song expresses his high moral character in describing King Wenceslas braving a fierce storm in order to help feed a poor neighbour. Wenceslas believed that his Christian faith needed to be put into action in practical ways. Wenceslas was brought up with a strong Christian faith by his grandmother St. Ludmila. Wenceslas own mother Drahomira, however, joined forces with an anti-Christian group that murdered Wenceslas grandmother, and seized power in Bohemia. Two years later in 922 AD, the evil Drahomira was deposed, and Good King Wenceslas became the ruler. He became Bohemias most famous martyr and patron saint. His picture appeared on Bohemian coins, and the Crown of Wenceslas became the symbol of Czech independence.

I should check these things out before I open my mouth. Tomorrow is indeed the Feast of St. Nicholas. The Feast of Stephen is December 26 and commemorates the martyrdom of Stephen as described in Acts 7.

Thanks lysie for the extra info...
Oops, Jane, if it's Liege, the dissertation should be on lace making....
Mr., M, the soloist for the ceremony is Korean-born....
Will remember that about those other roads...We've taken I-80, but also explored other routes too.
Must go. Night all!

The Chinese soprano, now singing "O. Holy Night," gave a Christian testimony as part of her introduction to the song. Bet we wouldn't have seen that 3 years ago!

Ya'll get some ice and snow up there in TN?
I am off to put some antifreeze in my tractor.
To: gulfcoast6
The ice and snow was mostly north of Nashville as I understand it. My drive to Nashville the last two days from the SE was free of ice or snow, but those who came from the northern areas of town got it. At least one of my colleagues had power out for 18 hours.

Happy Feast of Saint Nicholas (tomorrow)!

The History Channel "limos" show comes up again this Sunday, 2pm. Right in the middle of football. That's ok, cuz it was up against the Sopranos last night...

I didn't mean to say that history shouldn't be about personalities. I was just agreeing with you that it's a great change that the history of our nation transcends the personalities. When mankind looks back upon the 20th Century, it will find Hitler, Stalin, and the United States. Our 20th Century wasn't just FDR and Reagan, ours was as a nation. The American people have taken history. Not even the great British Empire can claim it: We are the Greeks, We are the Romans.
As with your sister and her book that brought to her Calhoun and Clay, the personalities and the stories bring history alive. I love little anecdotes best of all. Used properly, they are metaphors for an age.
