AMERICA - The Right Way!! (Day 684) [Remember the Trade Center!!]
Various News Sources and FReepers | December 5, 2002 | All of Us

Posted on 12/05/2002 4:35:35 AM PST by Chairman_December_19th_Society

We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail! [President Bush]

Good morning!! Do not let the victims of the attacks on New York and Washington, nor the brave members of our Nation's military who have given their lives to protect our freedom, die in vain!!

WINTER STORM #2 - UPDATE

...SNOW IS FALLING AT A MODERATE RATE ACROSS VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND

Overnight totals at the cottage are about 3", though this has not been measured yet. The current QPF says there is another 0.5 inches of precipitable water availble from 7 AM this morning through 3 AM tomorrow morning.

The event total estimate is now 8" for the area based on the QPF. That is still a 3-roll event. NWS forecasts call for as much as 10", if it appears that total will be met, then the designation will change to a 4-roller.

In the news:

Iraq has accused the weapons inspectors of being spies for the United States and Israel and has condemmed the inspection of one of the Presidential Palaces.

The United States will compare Iraq's weapons list, if they have one - Iraq is quoted in this morning's news as still saying they have no WMDs - against its own data, and is prepared to cite Iraq for a breach.

The United States is preparing to call up reserves in the event of a war with Iraq.

A US District Judge ruled that Jose Padilla, being held in the brig as an enemy combatant, does fall under the purvue of the Federal court system, insofar as to whether the Government made a correct determination of his status. [EDITORIAL NOTE: This is so bogus - it has got to be overturned!! It throws the whole ability of a Nation to capture the enemy out of whack!!]

And Strom Thurmond has turned 100 today.

For AMERICA - The Right Way, I remain yours in the Cause, the Chairman.

This style has gone out of favor the past decades in favor of movements, yes, but also in favor of studying the "common man".... Leading to dissertations on the most miniscule of topics....women & basket-making in Liege, 1790-1795 for example!!! LOL!
The worst of this genre is Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States." It's a leftist harangue intended to sanctify the downtrodden and the oppressed. The index mentions national leaders only in the context of a whip, or a slaughter by the National Guard. If Zinn were to do a history of the Soviet Union, he'd have to do the exact same thing. The difference would be that U.S. history has a happy ending. No matter how awful it is to people like Howard Zinn, America has faced its problems. It saddens the old boy that America is a success.

Like you say, what history is relevant? Except for basketweavers, basketweaving in 1786 falls into the category of "too much information." But that's what the University is for, to channel the trifle into harmless endeavor.

History Channel has a show on about Curtis LeMay. He also was an amateur radio operator. In fact, he was the driving force to use HF SSB (High Frequency, single side band) radios in long range bombers.

Speaking of radio frequency...the other day I was watching the DIY channel. It had a program on about remote control model airplanes and jets. WOW!!! I was amazed at how large those models are. Sheesh...I grew up with balsam board winged planes and a rubber banded prop.

LOL! They are pretty advanced. My RC helicopter cost more than my first car, and has 2 computers, one on the radio controller, and one in the helo. It even has a gyro to help control the yaw (heading). I can control 8 different things from the controller. And of course, I got mine in a frequency that requires a ham radio license, that way, I don't have to share frequencies (generally).

Are you and your family getting excited about moving?

Yes, it's hard to not be excited, although I seem to have my mind much more on other things. Today, though, we found out that the folks moving out have finally found a place and will be moving out on the 15th, the day we were to move in. That means we can't move in until the 16th, but that's fine. Mrs. Mulliner has taken that day off of work so we'll try to get moved the best we can on that day.

Is it true that Strom was passed over by Abe Lincoln as a running mate?

I enjoyed the show so much I watched the second parter. That meant 2 hours of remote controlling. Very interesting stuff. Competition...designing, etc. I truly enjoyed it. Guess I'm a kid at heart.

MM, good to know that the people have found a place. I ask if you are excited...'cause I am for you. :-) I remember buying my first house.

May I just say how intensely I dislike Word as a word processing program? I just spent the afternoon editing a test plan and was in the final stages, and accidentally deleted the first four pages because I was trying to get rid of some leading dots. Grrrrr....

My students were to have read "The Catbird Seat" and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" for class today. My assignment was based on them having read them. It seems that no one read both of them and I had some grumbling that made me think they didn't understand the stories too well.

Most of the grumbling was from the Asians. The one guy from Kyrgyzstan, a very bright young law school graduate, seemed to really get the humor and that brightened my day.

We were to cover both stories today, but I decided to give them an extra day for these. That means the Wodehouse story will be put off until Monday and maybe Tuesday. I cannot rush them through P. G. Wodehouse, the greatest writer in the English language.

I was very sorry to hear that Roone Arledge passed away.

Many years ago when he was in charge of sports, he hired Dolly Parton to sing and had Howard Cosell speak at the sports directors meeting of ABC affiliates.

At a early session in the day, I made the reminder announcement. I said, Don't forget that there will be a banquet at the Desert Inn tonight at 7:00Pm Vegas time. Lots of fantastic food, drinks, and great entertainment... ABC will pick up the tab. Once again ABC Sports has proved that it knows what sports fans like best. Howard Cosell and Dolly Parton will be the after dinner entertainment. This evening ABC Sports will bring you the greatest..... The sportscaster with a biggest mouth and the girl singer with the biggest ........................talent. That's at 7:00 at Desert Inn.

It is a very changed world. It is sad to note that I don't think that line would get a laugh today.

Back in the late 80's one of my program directors was having all kind of trouble getting a copy of the news sounder tape from the ABC Entertainment network. So I called Roone. When he answered the phone and found out what I wanted he went ballistic. He said, "You mean you called me just to get a sounder tape? (short pause) It would take longer to tell you how to get it than (short pause then in a disgusted voice ). I'll take care of it for you." Click...

Five minutes later the production studio guy called from ABC to say he was sending out the tape. Then he said, "It would take Jesus Christ 3 days to get an appointment with Roone Arlege. We are wondering who you are. We can't believe anyone has the clout to get him to personally bird dog a sounder tape for them?"

In my biggest bass voice, I replied "I am GOD (pause) And no one makes my Son wait 3 days and gets away with it." Click...

The tape came in the next day Fed Ex postage paid. We never got an invoice.

Lysie, JRandomFreeper: did the Hist. Channel mention, or do you know anything about John Hays Hammond, Jr.? I believe he developed the first radio-controlled devices. In about 1911, he hooked one up to a power boat and scared the goods out of the locals who thought it was possessed.

Mr. Mulliner: I only read the Thurber story. Don't dock my grades... please? (Thanks for the link!).

Utah Girl: Word sucks. Can I say it louder? WORD SUCKS. I write everything in WordPerfect. I only graduated to version 8 because of the 8-digit DOS limitation on file names in the older versions. Still, I tune my keyboard to WordPerfect 6.1. I don't need all the new stuff, and with the old style I don't need to touch the *&*(&$#(#*& mouse. I can do everything with the keyboard.

Good evening! This is the first chance I've had to get online today. I've been gone ALL day long (went Christmas shopping and had birthday lunch out with my mom and a friend) and I'm leaving again in just a few minutes with hubby to go get our Christmas tree.

I haven't read all the thread yet, but I did see your pings and I just wanted to take this chance to say THANK YOU so much for your very kind birthday wishes! I appreciate your thoughtfulness. (((HUGS))) all around, from me to you.

lysie, I love your Christmas card - too cute!

Molly, thanks for always providing the terrific links and pinging me to them.

I just pinged youse two to a thread on the Atkins diet. Come prepared to take off your gloves. There are some people who seem absolutely determined to 1) remain ignorant about how the Atkins diet really works, and 2) to be as critical as possible of everyone who tries to convince them otherwise.

I don't remember them mentioning it. I had heard about it, but don't know where I heard it.

I have a question for you. At school, we were looking at where the term "salamander" came from as relates to a very hot commercial broiler. I seem to remember something about a legend or belief that salamanders brought fire, from northern europe, but was not able to pull a reference from my CRS riddled brain.
