I shall not weight my message to you with an expression of my respect for the concentrated power in this country that you gentlemen represent. The safety of the country lies in the fact that you neutralize each other, and in the growing conviction of the country that the truth is not in you, but that it lies between you... I am not thereby consigning you all to an Ananias club, however strong your desire for close association under some banner, but I am explaining to you how each one of you saves the country from the rest.Just tell your friends at the coalition to buy my book. Out next Spring, from McFarland & Co, William Howard Taft and the First Motoring Presidency: 1909-1913-William Howard Taft, addressing an Associated Press dinner in New York from Boston by telephone, from "Taft phones Speech Here from Boston," New York Times, April 26, 1912
[I don't like the title, either. Mine was, "American Colossus: A Friendly Reassessment of the Motoring Presidency of William Howard Taft, 1909-1913"... authors have little say in these things.]
