Garrison Keillor has great performance talents. He should stick to them and shut his trap regarding politics.

Yep. It is amazing to me that he can pick up the nuances of individuals and miss so badly on groups and politics. He was really bitter in the article. And mean too.

Thank you very much for your condolences. It's only fitting that my Veteran Grandfather would pass on Veteran's Day.

Totally off the subject, but I'm wondering if any of you have a favorite casserole or two. We are having a "Casserole" shower for a friend that is due with her second boy next month, and all she wanted was food so she wouldn't have to cook. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I thought about making my famous bread pudding, but I wanted a main dish as well.

Mama Lo's Broccoli Casserole

5 slices of day-old bread, torn into bite-sized pieces
1 bunch broccoli (or half of a 16-oz frozen bag, thawed)
3 eggs
1/4 cup milk
4 Tbsp butter, melted
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 tsp. salt
3 Tbsp sugar

Preheat oven to 350. Butter an 8-inch square Pyrex baking dish. Cover bottem of dish generously with torn bread. Cut broccoli head and tops of stems into bite-size pieces and lay broccoli on top of bread.
Mix together all remaining ingredients. Pour over broccoli and bread. Cover with aluminum foil. Bake 35 minutes. Serves 6.

I got this recipe from a book by Jane and Michael Stern. They travel around the country and write about the good food they find along the way.

Hi there - tomorrow I'll give you a sausage, egg, and other goodies casserole that I will eat morning, noon, and night.

A receipe from my AF mil usually served Christmas morning, but that is so good we now serve it at the drop of a hat.

Good Morning!

Gees, I feel like a frump. It was late when I got in last night and I didn't read the thread before I answered my freepmail. So sorry to hear about your Grandfather. So ironic for him to pass on Veteran's Day.

Good morning. Cindy Adams reports -

NEWMARKET's "Condoleeza Rice Story" bio says:

* Her obsession is shoes. Buys eight pair of Ferragamos in one shot.

* Past lovers include a Denver Bronco, San Francisco 49er wide receiver, university coach, Fortune 500 professional.

* The youngest of the "Four Little Girls" killed in Sept. 15, 1963's Birmingham church bombing was her friend from kindergarten.

* A Democrat in 1976, she changed party affiliation over Jimmy Carter's handling of the USSR invasion of Afghanistan. She was only 21 at the time.

Liz Smith quotes the NY Times, that paragon of truthfulness and objectivity:

But the Times cautions: "Both parties actually should be careful about the lessons they draw from the election . . . the country continues to be split almost exactly down the middle. The Democrats' two most crippling losses occurred in Minnesota and Missouri, where the voting margins narrowed to practically nothing.

"Obviously, a narrow win is better than a narrow loss, but Mr. Bush has a habit of interpreting even the tiniest margin of victory as mandates for sweeping changes."

Wasn't it Rush Limbaugh who noted yesterday that in the contested U.S. Senate races on 11/5, Republicans won 68 percent of the vote? How is that "exactly down the middle"? The wishful thinking among Dems is that they constitute exactly 50 percent of the electorate, but the wackier they get, e.g., Nancy Pelosi, the more they will be perceived the fringe party - which is fine with me. Oh yes, the point of Liz's article is to trot out Gary Hart as a viable presidential candidate for 2004. Quoting Tina Brown (what does she know?):

. "He is a less-senescent 65. He is thoughtful as hell. He keeps cranking out his scary but prescient reports on national security; even before 9/11, Hart was warning of the risks of terrorists striking a skyscraper. After the Clinton years, his ancient hanky panky with Donna Rice . . . seems almost quaint . . . He is much more credible now he's going gray." link

I'll accept Tina's description of John Edwards, though: a GQ twinkie.

SAUSAGE, EGG, HASH BROWN CASSEROLE

1 lb. sausage9 lg. eggs, slightly beaten3/4 c. milk1/4 c. melted butter24 oz. pkg. hash browns8 oz. shredded cheddar cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Layer cooked and drained sausage on bottom of well greased 9"x13" pan. Add milk and butter to beaten eggs and pour over sausage. Add hash browns and top with shredded cheese. Bake 1 hour

There are any number of variations to this receipe - you may substitute croutons or crumbled bread for the spuds and moving them to the lowest level of the casserole before cooking.

This receipe cannot be screwed up. ;-)

Hold your collective noses, here's the latest take on the Rats' future:

McPain and Chafee switch parties in January, giving the dems their majority back in the Senate. Then the dems run McPain for president, neutralizing GWB's strenghth on national security and appealing to the independents pubbies need to win. (Evidence is the two major Dem advisors McPain has added to his staff in recent days)

Makes me physically ill to think about it. But I think there are two problems with this scenario. One, I'm not sure the country would stand for a second "coup" in the Senate. And I'm not sure Zell Miller would stay with the dems, especially given the Pelosi wing in the House.

But it sure gives us something to gnash our teeth over!
Makes me physically ill to think of it.

Thanks for the yummy recipe, JL. Looks perfect for a cool day.

In other news, Clinton wins Irish peace prize. Of course, to those granting the award, it really isn't essential that he actually helped bring about peace, just that he talked about it a lot.

I don't know that McCain can maintain the appearance of sanity (or at least mental stability) for another two years.

Check this out:

One man has used his dry wit to promote Viagra in national TV commercials. The other has never seemed to have any problems with his libido.

Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.) and ex-President Bill Clinton, however opposed to each other they once were as presidential rivals in 1996, now find themselves bound together by a single common thread: Their wives are U.S. senators, and they are members of the exclusive club of Senate spouses. full story.

Ugh.

“It could be very intimidating. But I said to myself: ‘Hey, which of those guys ever won Mr. Universe? Who had Danny DeVito as a twin brother? Who did a movie with Sharon Stone? Who is married to Maria Shriver?’ Me, so there you go.”

— Arnold Schwarzenegger, describing his qualifications for a possible run for governor of California in 2006. source
