LAMBERTVILLE City resident Douglas B. Carroll was frustrated by the drought punishing the region this year and decided to do something about it, according to Lambertville police. Unfortunately for him, Carroll's method was somewhat unconventional and drew attention from Lambertville's finest. Around 3 a.m. Sunday, Officer James Rosso saw Carroll, 24, walking across the free bridge from New Hope to Lambertville, wearing nothing but a backpack. "When he was questioned, Mr. Carroll told Rosso that he thought if he ran over the bridge naked, it would rain," said Lambertville Police Director Bruce Cocuzza. "In all honesty, it did rain (Monday) night, so he accomplished his purpose. It hadn't rained in quite a while." Rosso didn't learn the reason for Carroll's unusual early morning stroll immediately, though. Driving the wrong direction, Rosso had to turn around in New Hope and return to Lambertville, eventually following Carroll as he tried to escape by running out to Lewis Island, trying to get redressed as he went. Carroll was charged with lewdness and released without being required to post bail. "I don't think we're going to make a major case of it," Cocuzza said. "But he had to be arrested, obviously."
