I have been thinking lately it would be nice to have a thread (maybe even a forum later?) for the homeschooling families, because you know how many of us there are. This would not replace us pinging each other with all the great articles we find. It would be a place where we could discuss what curriculum we use, vent when needed, share our successes, compare notes, alert each other to cool things we find on the internet, and vent some more. I'm sure we all have found other sites with forums that we use, but since FReepers are such a cool breed, where better to start up a forum? What do you think?

I've heard tremendous things about Singapore...all positive.

We've used Saxon since 2nd grade. I wasn't thrilled with Saxon for 2nd and 3rd grade but when my daughter started Saxon 54 we rolled! We're starting pre Alg in a few weeks.

Anyone using Singapore math? How do you all like it?

I like it alot and so do my kids! This year the twins are starting 1st grade and my eldest will be in 3rd grade and we have been using Singapore Math for 2 years. My eldest son was in the public school for the last 3 months of it last year (the result of a cross-country move and not much knowledge of the homeschooling laws here) and when he took the Stanford 9 test, at the end of second grade, he scored in the 98th percentile.

I'm using LA along with Abeka...there's a method to my madness, I promise. LOL I'm using LA for history, geography, and science enrichment. Abeka alone, imho, is dry and doesn't spend time on the meat of an era. LA will offer us that. :o)

According to HSLDA we're (PA) tied for worst place with N.Y. but both states are fighting to throw off some ball & chains. PA is really corrupt (NEA keystone) and depending upon the superintendent in a school district one could be granted relative freedom after filing the beginning affidavit and educational objectives or one could be facing trumped up truancy charges (even though papers are properly filed.)

Then standardized testing is required in certain years and in all years a portfolio of work samples from required subjects and a reading log must be evaluated by a state teacher or school shrink and then it all has to be submitted to the superindentent of the school district for them to nitpick, glean ideas from and figure how to further harrass the poor home educator.

I have a good friend in PA who homeschools and she has been under the gun, so to speak. HSLDA has had to step in and help her out with the local apparatchik.

This has been my friend's experience. The other HS families around her are in bunker-down mentality. My sympathies to you.

I would also like to see curriculum discussions. I know that what works for one family does not necessarily work for another. Something like this would also be helpful. I can't tell you how many math programs we tried before settling for the one we're using now.
