My boss and I were talking about the difference between the "country" and the "city" when we went for lunch to a cafe in the rural community where we are building my house (he owns the house next door to ours). He mentioned how nice it is that the largest and most crowded section of the restaurants in the rural communities are the smoking sections, with the non-smoking section at the back of the establishment, even in the upscale restaurants. We sat with the ranchers and farmers, carpenters and other craftsmen, smoking and discussing our work. The majority of those ranchers and craftsmen are well over the age of 75, and fiercely protective of their right to drink, smoke, or whatever. These are the folks who built and sustain that community. God, am I ever glad to be moving from the city. Two months, building, packing, and counting down!
