That happened to me once with him on a thread a few months ago. I was as surprised as you were, because he usually doesn't go off like that.

A couple of years ago, some wood rats moved into our attic in the fall to get warm, since it was an easy walk from the greenway and woods over the back fence. The scurrying noises were driving the dogs and cat nuts, and the cat would have gone right up there through the trap door, if I would have let him. Even though he weighs over 20 pounds, I didn't want him to tangle with rats. I didn't really want to use poison, because of the awful stench of dead rats for a week (at least), so I set off three bug bombs, and shut the trap door. I never heard such frantic running noises in my life! I was gratified to see the little buggers exiting by way of the screening on the soffitt they had chewed through, and heading hell to breakfast back over the fence for the woods. We replaced the screening with heavy hardware cloth, and voila! No more rats........
