I lived in town and only spent summers and some weekends on my grandparents farm. It was wonderful. Tobacco sticks could be anything that your imagination needed them to be.

Well, since black snakes and copperheads just LOVED to climb into the piles of sticks, the thing they were MOST handy for, was to be used as an EXCELLENT snake smacker.

You can swing them fast enough to hear them whistle. The snake doesn't have a chance if you can see him. Light like bamboo, strong like Louisville Slugger. Fearsome.

And of course, being the well-behaved vision of Angelic goodness that I was, my Grandma never had cause to pop ME with one, like a lowly copperhead or anything.

Those old barns were so hot.

No need to remind me, it was my ass scraping the tin roof in the top of them. A lot of times I hung two barns a day. And that was after pulling one, that morning.

But I was wealthy for a teenager.
