That's wild! I bet it cost less to sneak the dog in than to buy one at the concession stand. ;)

Well. I wonder if this is for real, or is just part of the marketing gossip and hype.

I have mixed feelings about that because I am hoping that Elijah Wood is the "one" who gets the supporting actor nomination this year, unless they can submit more than one.

And I also wonder what the rules are that distinguish between "best actor" and "best supporting actor". If Frodo's part is pushed to the front.... Elijah Wood might qualify for the Actor nomination. But Viggo may also... We are really looking at two distinct stories with different lead actors in TTT.

Viggo Mortenson will probably not be ignored, I don't think. He may be in the running... Since he is the Title Role in RoTK... perhaps they will push him for Best Actor in year three. But that might be Elijah's premier performance too.

And not having seen it... I am not sure the academy would go for it a Serkis nomination... Andy may have been the voice and the movement, but the "face" on the acting is not his... It will be interesting for sure!

No, but I've seen something...maybe a kind of amplifier?

I'll have to check in to it. I remember seeing something just very briefly and I don't know why I didn't think about it sooner.

But paying for stable space is even more expensive than the lessons!!!

That is why I said lessons would be the cheapest part of the "I Love Horses" phase! ;~D

I think your juniper bush is the one you make gin out of. Our cedar trees can sometimes be sticky, too. They grow tall, though, are fairly big trees and are the ones you get closet lining from. They make wonderful firewood, too.

Our cat that we had in those days would often get in the Christmas tree, and screw up or break ornaments. He also ate the aluminum icicles, though he couldn't digest them.

I snuck a big cup of coffee into the theater, so I could stay awake during AOTC.

That raises an interesting dilemma of what exactly acting is. Does a masked actor count and is a cg mask any different than a silicone-latex mask?

But I, for one, am glad Jar Jar didn't get nominated. "Meesa so happy fah dis awahd! Meesa wants to tank de academy..."

I think you're right, they don't sell coffee in theaters. Yeah it was a good idea for AOTC. The kids loved it though, didn't they?

The Western Red Cedar is aromatic too... good for closet linings. And the tree needles are soft and not stickery.

I just say "NO!" to juniper bushes now. I have yanked too many of them out and they are too stickery!

I wonder if any of the LOTR movies will ever get a major Oscar, since not only are they "fantasy," but fantasy that clearly delineates between good and evil and PC Hollywood likes to imagine that everything is shades of grey.

Even though I imagine JRRT would not approve of the label "fantasy."

I'm gonna look in my tree book and see if they are related.

I think I'd rather see that then have to sit through another Oscars hosted by *shudder* Whoopi Goldberg....

Yeah... That is the rub. None of Gollum's facial expressions will be Andy's. Andy may have inspired the expression with his own, but the result is not him. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

The only other example I can think of is the movie "The Mask". That was highly CG oriented.... but it was Jim Carry's face, and his acting, I think... Movies are magic these days, and it is really hard to know what you are seeing!

Perhaps a new award is in order: Best Ensemble. I must give in to the liberal touchy-feely "everyone's a winner" mentality and say that singling out the actors in a work like this is not only impossible but diminishes the performance as a whole. Much of the power in each role is the chemistry between the characters.

I'd like to see PJ get a Lifetime Achievement for the three films- there will never be anything like them again. Ever.

I agree, ksen, I'm not usually up on the Oscars much, but I bet Jar Jar deserves one more than many folks that get them. Come to think of it, he probably deserves a Nobel more than some of the people that get them, the way they've been handing those out.

Well, we have debated that before, and will again, I am sure! I think all movies are fantasy. I don't think there is a clear line... I don't think they will be automatically excluded, but what do I know?

I reject that Hollywood rejects movies outright because they show fights between good and evil. They may view morality in shades of gray where we see distinctions, but I don't think they reject movies that show righteousness. I don't think even those people think that way.

My prediction (on the record!) is still that IF the project is to be given a best picture nod, it will be in year three, as a symbolic nod to the three-year work as a whole. I didn't predict they were in the running for year one because of the precident it would set up, and probably not for the middle movie either, because it is the middle film. It will be nominated all three years for both Best Picture and Best Director, but whether it wins even in year three will depend on what else is in the running. In all seriousness, what Tom Hanks does will have as much to do with who wins as how good our films are.

The British Academy does have a "Best Ensemble Cast" award, which FoTR won, I think. It was a tough movie to award for acting. There is no real lead, it really was a group success... though in my mind Elijah qualifies as the lead actor in FoTR. FoTR really is Frodo's story. But I guess he didn't stand out enough to qualify for the Actor nomination.

A Nobel peace prize perhaps, but not one of the academic ones. In fact, he is overqualified for a peace prize, after all he did strike the fatal blow to the Republic and usher in the darkness of the Galactic Empire. Arafat can't even claim that.
