Well. I wonder if this is for real, or is just part of the marketing gossip and hype.
I have mixed feelings about that because I am hoping that Elijah Wood is the "one" who gets the supporting actor nomination this year, unless they can submit more than one.
And I also wonder what the rules are that distinguish between "best actor" and "best supporting actor". If Frodo's part is pushed to the front.... Elijah Wood might qualify for the Actor nomination. But Viggo may also... We are really looking at two distinct stories with different lead actors in TTT.
Viggo Mortenson will probably not be ignored, I don't think. He may be in the running... Since he is the Title Role in RoTK... perhaps they will push him for Best Actor in year three. But that might be Elijah's premier performance too.
And not having seen it... I am not sure the academy would go for it a Serkis nomination... Andy may have been the voice and the movement, but the "face" on the acting is not his... It will be interesting for sure!

That raises an interesting dilemma of what exactly acting is. Does a masked actor count and is a cg mask any different than a silicone-latex mask?
But I, for one, am glad Jar Jar didn't get nominated. "Meesa so happy fah dis awahd! Meesa wants to tank de academy..."

I wonder if any of the LOTR movies will ever get a major Oscar, since not only are they "fantasy," but fantasy that clearly delineates between good and evil and PC Hollywood likes to imagine that everything is shades of grey.
Even though I imagine JRRT would not approve of the label "fantasy."

Perhaps a new award is in order: Best Ensemble. I must give in to the liberal touchy-feely "everyone's a winner" mentality and say that singling out the actors in a work like this is not only impossible but diminishes the performance as a whole. Much of the power in each role is the chemistry between the characters.
I'd like to see PJ get a Lifetime Achievement for the three films- there will never be anything like them again. Ever.
