{ex pink Floyd}Roger Waters Rips ‘Prick’ James Hetfield {Metallica}Over Apolitical Stance
Ultimate classics rock ^ | 15th October 2026 | Corey Irwin

Waters didn’t pull any punches when discussing Metallica frontman James Hetfield.

The Pink Floyd rocker was a guest on the Katie Halper Show podcast, where the topic of politics’ place in music was brought up. The host pointed to Hetfield’s recent comments during a Metallica show at the Sphere, where he declared: “Metallica is not here, like some other entertainers, to influence you with their bull—-, OK? We’re here to forget about all of the outside s—. Metallica's agenda is love, energy, and heavy music, baby

In response to those comments, Waters tore into Hetfield.

“Can we stop talking about this prick?” the Pink Floyd icon remarked. “I’m so bored with him. He’s just showing that he’s a complete prick. He's got an IQ of about three and why we're talking about him, I honestly don't know because he's a nobody and he'll always be. He may have a few hundred million dollars or whatever, but he's a prick and he's no musician. I heard them. I told you I heard them playing acoustic instruments and they couldn't. It was appalling.”

Waters went on to note the importance of empathy in society, suggesting that Hetfield was never taught to care for others.

"Obviously I wish he had grown up with a mama or a dad or a friend or even a cousin or somebody in the family who taken him to one side when he was little,” he said. "It's a shame this prick didn't have somebody around him to explain that being kind is way more important than all that loud music and bouncing around and whatever. Being kind, have some empathy for your fellow human beings because we need that to spread through across the whole world."

Waters has been one of rock’s most outspoken supporters of Palestine.

Point taken. “One” is cutting it close though.

Opposition to war isn’t necessarily a left vs right thing all the time.

Now you could take issue with the “One” video, which was based on the movie “Johnny Got His Gun” which was written by the Communist Dalton Trumbo.

When I first saw Pink Floyd the Vietnam War was still going on. Lots of protests going on in those days. But PF played and sang their music and Roger didn’t lecture anyone then. Saw them a few years later and the focus was still on the music.

Once Waters left PF and became a has-been then he somehow moved his identity from being music-focused to leftist-focused. It’s a shame.

“Being kind, have some empathy for your fellow human beings because we need that to spread through across the whole world.”

Unless they have a different opinion than you.
If they have a different opinion than yours, you can treat them any way you like.

Keep the loonies on the path.

The band Chicago, back then was very political. The insert for Chicago III, showed all the band members at a military cemetary wearing military uniforms. And a lot of their early songs were directed against the war and Nixon in particular (A Song For Richard And His Friends)

“He’s got an IQ of about three.” The dumb loser cannot think of a good insult. Oh well, Pink Floyd was cool in 1973 and Metallica still rocks. Megadeath is better.

Like Roger had for Richard Wright or Syd Barrett?

I beg to disagree wit Roger. They are playing very good classical music with modern instruments.

and I offer this as proof

So basically Waters had a meltdown and spewed a bunch of childish crap at somebody else for not bombarding his audience with his own politics. Its quite obvious who the prick here is.

I used to have an amusing story about Waters at a restaurant a relative of mine owned. Non political but I doubt I’ll ever tell it anymore given the way things are with him.

Ol’ Roger sounds like a cult member with a case of the sads because someone more relevant than him refuses to join his cult.
Please ignore him, Mr. Hetfield.
He’s not worth the effort.

Yeah I am going to listen to somebody talk about empathy, who treats the people around them like crap.

And that went ditto for John Lennon.

I made burgers for James and Francesca in 1988 when they stopped to eat at the Fudruckers where I worked. They were in town playing for the Monsters of Rock tour.

I side with the AMERICAN James Hetfield, not the Britsh has-been. Hard to believe Hetfield was born in Downey, CALIFORNIA. He is right, 100%. People don't go to concerts to hear POLITICAL SPEECHES.

Anyway, perhaps Joe Rogan could sponsor a CAGE MATCH between these two. I suspect HETFIELD would crush WATERS in short order.
