Ford has a Mustang ute sitting in its Experimental Vehicle Building. I'd much rather see it in my driveway.

Despite being a die-hard DIY type with more ongoing projects than a film studio, I’m not what you’d call a “truck guy.” I appreciate them for their capabilities, but I’ve never really felt compelled to carve out driveway space for one. I’m a bit too high on horsepower and handling chops to get excited about big, practical pickups. But a ute, like this one-off Ford Mustang with a factory-engineered bed? In the immortal words of the sultan of Hatay, I even like the color.
In fact, this machine looks suspiciously similar to a Mustang GT350 R I drove several years ago. It could very well be; prototypes and press vehicles are often consigned to the crusher after their jobs are done. By comparison, giving one to some metal shop apprentices seems like a stay of execution.
The project gave apprentices the opportunity to hone their skills on their own concept vehicle. In place of the Mustang’s rear seat and ample trunk, there’s a surprisingly large pickup bed (parts of which were lifted from a production Ranger, Ford says). The students even fashioned the rear panel of the trunk into a makeshift tailgate, which you can see open here.

Will never happen as long as there are fleet-wide mileage standards. They want to have bit trucks in the fleet, so averaging out to fleet requirements means passenger cars have to have really good mileage. This is what killed the El Camino.
This will always be a concept car unless/until Trump kills fleet average mileage standards.
The Mirage! What a beaut!
This would be awesome as a Mustang SUV….
Finally found a Mustang that is worth a second look.
Kinda like a coupe with a rumble seat...for those of us who remember them.
Can the El Camino’s return be far off?

I saw one of these in Salt Lake City a few months ago.
Aggggghhhhhhh!!! My eyes!
Yep it’s a ford. Another useless overpriced truck wannabe that will cost you three new transmissions and a possible electrical fire or two. Plus the smoke coming out of the ignition is a nice touch.
Enjoy the $1,500 monthly payments for 8 years, the $1,200 property tax annually, and insurance out the rear.
My wifey has a Santa Cruz and I mean she really loves it. More than 5 people I have seen with them and they all love them. The bed is plenty big to carry girl stuff. And its turbocharged. Perfect tiny girl “pick-up truck”. Great for in town and short hops in the city. A couple over 100k miles and were holding up well.
i’m waiting for the Mustang crew-cab pickup with a Detroit Diesel engine that can pull a dump trailer ...
Or a two-door version of an Explorer Sport Trac. I have Sport Trac that has been a trouble-free vehicle that fits my needs perfectly.
Ford also made an electric Mustang. That doesn’t mean that we want one.
The Subie Brat will go more places than that Mustang-truck thing.
I was thinking more shades of Dodge Rampage.
