A federal appeals court Wednesday morning halted the execution of the lone woman on Tennessee’s death row about an before it was scheduled to occur.
In a last-minute decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth District said it needed to review claims that Christa Pike’s legal team made in a bid to stop her execution.
“The interests of justice and the finality of Pike’s impending execution compel the entry of a short stay of execution in order to properly analyze the parties’ fully briefed arguments and resolve the issues on the merits,” the court said.
It’s unclear how long the execution may be halted for. It was scheduled for 10 a.m. local time in Nashville.
Both Gov. Bill Lee and the Supreme Court had said they would not stop Pike’s execution.
Before learning Monday that Lee would not be intervening in her case, Pike, 50, wrote in a letter to NBC News, shared by her spiritual adviser: “Whether my clemency is granted or not, I am at peace.”
“I am not afraid to die,” wrote Pike, who has been on death row for over three decades. “I’m only nervous about the process.”

I don’t think there is any doubt about this monster’s guilt of murder by merciless torture and hasn’t been for 32 years. Yet this drags on with liberal judges and bonehead lawyers considering new legal points. This is well beyond the life of the poor teenage girl whose life was stolen by these scumbos.
The trajectory she was on would make you think that going to prison may have prolonged her life by 30 years. The victim was done there and then.
Pure BS...
Ref: Cain and Abel
It's been 30 years of appeals, and that is still not enough. Ridiculous
I must be psychic!
Next day, all men on death row immediately identify as women.
To family and friends of victim, “justice delayed is justice denied, “ as the lawyers arguments all hinge on , “if her case were tried before a jury now... “ That’s why you’re tried by a jury of your peers. Strikes at heart of rule of law.
A prolonged wait on Death Row is not only cruel & inhuman, it’s unnecessarily very expensive over time.
A limited number of appeals should all be wrapped up within 2 or 3 years.
I believe there have been Third World dictatorships where guards will show up on a Monday morning and say "We will execute you tomorrow" but then on Tuesday morning they say "We changed our mind". And then they show up on Thursday morning and say "We will execute you tomorrow" but then on Friday morning they say "We changed out mind".
I believe this is considered to be a form on torture. It is inhumane. It is the sort of thing that do-gooders in American protest against.
But we do it right here, and we call it Mercy.
Of course, a stay!
Her victim didn’t get a stay from their execution!
So the choices the state offers are the chair or lethal injection, whatever form is allowed or approved , official and final anyways.
Pick one
This isn’t the make a wish show lady , snap to it , look sharp .
HORRIFIC. Condolences to remaining family and friends of Colleen Slemmer. Some of them have probably died knowing that justice was never served. SAD.
This is especially ironic as lethal injection isn’t regarded as ‘cruel and unusual punishment’, but this yo-yoing of a court (in judicial overreach) certainly is.
This is the USSC's problem child to set straight ... as the Court has so often had to do -- and has done -- in recent decades.
Fascinating story - she got saved in prison and fully understood she must pay her debt to society, although aware that Jesus paid her debt to God.
Maybe she had postpartum depression
Her first plea for a stay hinged on the botched lethal injection in TN a little while ago. When the judge said that has been fixed, go ahead with the execution her lawyers came up with the idea that she had been abused by men as a child, and wanted to be executed by a woman. No women executioners in TN. Judge denied that excuse.
Then she said I don’t want it done in a men’s prison (only execution place around) and that too was denied.
