Former President George W. Bush warned that Americans risk forgetting a critical lesson of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks if the United States turns inward and ignores threats developing overseas.
"Our nation occasionally goes through isolationist periods, where the attitude is, 'Well, we've got too many problems at home. Therefore, who cares about what happens overseas?'" Bush said Wednesday, according to CBS News. "Which really means to me they just don't pay attention to the lessons of 9/11, because what happens overseas matters to our national security at home."
Bush delivered the warning at his presidential library in Dallas alongside former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who served as his national security adviser when terrorists attacked the United States nearly 25 years ago.
The former president said the U.S. does not necessarily need to deploy soldiers abroad but should support people fighting tyranny.
"We don't have to send troops," Bush said. "We ought to at least stand with them and stand beside them because this is what we went through 250 years ago. And again, it's a belief that everybody wants to be free, and we saw that in Afghanistan."
Bush ordered U.S. forces into Afghanistan after 9/11, beginning what became America's longest war. U.S. forces withdrew in 2021 after nearly 20 years, and the Taliban returned to power.
The 43rd president pushed back against arguments that Afghans did not understand the difference between life under a democratic government and Taliban rule.

Dumbass Bush should've paid more attention to the threats growing on our own soil right under his snooty nose .
I would not object for Bush 43 being tried for treason and war crimes, and, if found guilty given the maximum penalty.
A new dictator, ours, should have been installed and given a free hand.
Or did he help try to get that Epic City set up in Texas?
He helped set the stage for that.
Why? Saddam was never attacking any American assets. He was well established, knew very well how to stay in power.
“Bush: Isolationism Ignores Central Lesson of 9/11”. I’ll be darned I thought George was still looking for WMD’s in Iraq.
Yeah, but what about the central Causes of 9/11 (and 9/10)...

I know Bush is hated here on Free Republic.
What I don’t know is when this happened.
9-11 was before my time here, but I suspect people here were supportive of him at one time. What I don’t know is when that changed..
I think not, so what is he talking about?
My guess is around 2008.
IIRC, Bush 1 gave Saddam the same type of nod-nod, wink-wink toward invading Kuwait as Biden did to Putin regarding Ukraine.
After all, the Cold War was winding down back then and the M-I-C needed a fresh target.
Bombing and rebuilding is great for business. 😛
Usually, the POTUS is a puppet.
The American withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 was odd though.
Still stupid after all these years.
And vice versa. Is it going to be two Republican presidents in a row who ruined their administrations with foreign wars?
Worse than Obama. So much damage. So much betrayal. Remember we have to fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them here? How’s that going for Minneapolis, Dearborn, NYC, Seattle, LA etc? How’s that going or iraq, iran, quatar, (sorry Tucker) afghanistan? Jorge if your listening, Bite me. If you don’t know what that means, ask your buddy slick willie.
Hey W, you jackass, they’re not “overseas” anymore, they’re in the U.S. and every other western country because your globalist buddies allowed them to come here.
Bush waxing eloquent about 9/11 ... or anything, for that matter — is rich. He needs to shut his yap.
