Amazon pilots were warned they were coming in ‘too low’ and ‘too fast’ before deadly crash

The pilots of the Amazon cargo plane that crashed in Miami, killing five people, were issued multiple warnings for flying “too low” to the ground — and acknowledged they were going “too fast” before they overshot the runway, officials said.

The National Transit Safety Board (NTSB) released transcripts from the Boeing 767’s cockpit voice recorder Wednesday that revealed one of the two pilots made a remark about the plane’s high rate of speed about 100 seconds before they hit the ground.

“The other pilot made additional comments regarding the aircraft’s excessive speed throughout the remainder of the recording. There was not a consistent verbal response to the comments about speed,” the NTSB said

The autopilot appears to have disconnected seconds later, according to the recording, and a “too low terrain” callout was issued electronically four times.

The recording then captured the plane landing on the runway and ”sounds similar to the aircraft departing the paved surface.”

Prime Air flight 7598 crashed on the runway at Miami International Airport around 2 p.m. Sunday before plowing into multiple vehicles and bursting into flames, officials said.

Five people died in the incident. Five others were injured, including the pilots, identified Tuesday as Felipe Silva Molina, 37, and Joseph Carroll, 55.

I’m going to make a wild-eyed guess that these two “pilots” will never fly anything ever again, and they’ll be lucky to stay out of prison.

You’ve got that right. Captain Steeeve is a retired American Airlines pilot who really knows his stuff. He will give pilots the benefit of the doubt if possible. This time Captain Steeeve gave them an ass whooping. He figured these pilots couldn’t get a job anywhere else, the bottom of the barrel, sort of like the illegal alien gypsy truckers which endanger our highways.

Indeed.

This crash was not an accident. It wasn’t even a demonstration of incompetence.

It shows complete, callous disregard for safety of flight.

This accident is hard to fathom. I would like to believe that that the pilot flying had a medical emergency like a mini stroke and the pilot monitoring wasn’t able to ascertain the problem. If there wasn’t some level of impairment, how is this accident this even possible?

You are a very thoughtful person, always quick to reach a hand out to those in need. I appreciate that.

The Boeing 767 and 757 airplanes are, “clean,” meaning the design is free of typical form drag. This means it will not slow down when descending.
I have an extensive history flying both airplanes.
The saying we used to fly them was, “you can’t slow down when you go down.”
So, if not at the planned speed at the point of descent, you will accelerate as soon as you lower the nose.
The pilots in question were not pilots, they were simply passengers!!
Their both failing to execute a missed approach/ “go around,” was fatal.
I would suggest a criminal charge in this matter.

Yep, only time tower calls for go-around is for traffic or issues on the ground.

There is some pilot on youtube that went through the radio transcript that was released. IIRC there were 8 warnings, all automated I think.

Some guy by the name of Captain Steeeve:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm6G7EOP5Qc

At 1000’ elevation they got a warning because the plane wasn’t configured the correct way (stuff like speed, wing flap positions, etc.)

Then more warnings 15 seconds later, 25 seconds later, etc. Each warning they were supposed to pull up and fly around and get back into the landing pattern. The youtube guy said those automated warnings are mandatory to go around - not just a “hey, you’re a little too fast - just wanted to let you know”.

Yeah, as a former aircraft maintenance guy in the Air Force with an interest in aviation, I watch Capt. Steeeve all the time. He’s the best.

The pilots f-ed up big time and 5 people (at least) paid with their lives. Sigh.
