Note - it is technically incorrect to call Ursula von der Leyen the “EU President” because no single person holds that title.
Power is split across different EU institutions, each with its own president.
She is the President of the EU Commission i.e. the chief bureaucrat to execute what the EU Council and EU parliament tell her to execute. The EU Council proposes new laws, manages the EU budget, and ensures member states follow EU rules
You also have:
- President of the European Council (António Costa), which guides the political direction of the bloc. His job is to get together national prime ministers and presidents to set the long-term political direction of the bloc
- President of the European Parliament (Roberta Metsola). Chairing the legislate branch that refines and approves/rejects laws.

The Triumvirates (the first Crassus-Caesar-Pompey and the second Antony-Octavian-Lepidus) were not formal organizational structures and didn't outlast their members. They were also geographic divisions of absolute control.
the President of the EU council, of the parliament and of the Commission are no different than the separation between the President (executive), speaker of Congress (legislative) andhead of the US governors (EU Council) --

though technically Ursula the President of the EU commission is more akin to a Prime Minister than the President of USA in election or in powers.

- the MEPs of Parliament vote on who will be the Commission President
- To take office, the President must win an absolute majority vote in the Parliament. For instance, current President Ursula von der Leyen had to secure a majority of 401 votes from MEPs to win her mandate
i suppose the better comparison is to a Presidential cabinet member - they aren’t elected, but they are the top bureaucrats who are to execute the President’s will.
National governments nominate the Commissioners, who must then pass grueling, multi-hour public grillings by EU committees before the Parliament votes to confirm the entire administration
I personally think it would be better if they scrapped the EU parliament and reduced the President of the EU commission to being a pure executor i.e. administrator who does what (s)he is told to do - a glorified program/project manager.
Push it back to being led by the EU council (i.e. the leaders of the 27 countries) while retaining a revolving Primus-inter-pares
Remember when the FEMALE president of Argentina literally stole everyone’s 401k savings to ‘make it fair’ for those that had no retirement savings? All in one day, everything you worked forall you life, scrimped and saved for GONE.................
They wanted to create a Euro-version of the United States, but had no cohesive social ‘glue’ to hold it together.................
Somewhat - the French wanted a unitary state - like they have a unitary state (everything in France is run through Paris), but Germany and Belgium don’t want that — both are very Federal states with individual states haign a lot more power than US states.
The EU can work as a confederation - i.e. a larger version of the Swiss federation
