A nearly century-old Wine Country cheesemaker is closing its award-winning factory citing ongoing challenges since the Covid pandemic.

Vella Cheese in Sonoma County announced Monday that after 94 years it has made the “incredibly difficult decision” to cease production of its famous products.

“Our business has never fully recovered from the challenges of COVID, and the financial demands of operating a small, artisanal company in today’s fast-paced food industry have become more than we can sustain,” the message read. The firm was founded in 1931 by Gaetano “Tom” Vella, who worked at the Sonoma Mission Creamery before a group of dairymen called on him to start a cheese factory of his own, according to its website.

“That has nothing to do with COVID”

Don’t impede the monomania; all roads lead to Covid around here.

What is curious is that they aren’t trying to sell the operation, the brand, or anything. They are just simply ceasing operation.

Their main remaining asset, after their brand name, appears to be their historic building on 2nd Street in Sonoma. Which would be Prop 13 protected and surely paid off long ago.

We were fortunate enough to have spent many good years in Santa Monica and Marina del Rey when the kids were little. No problem letting them to to the beach, no problem visiting my daughter’s best friend at ni who lived many blocks away. We thank God for those happy years in a beautiful place.

I hate to tell you, but from afar, it looks like there are plenty of socialists in your part of the country. Not as many as California, granted, but plenty nonetheless.

Dane and Milwaukee counties are the worst.

We’re like any purple state - the enclaves of cement-dwelling Le Miserables live in the biggest cities, sucking off the Government Teat or the Indoctrination Systems of the University. The rest of us are Normals. :)

But, seriously. Can’t people shut up for one minute and just make the cheese? LOL!
