USPS Threatens Post Office Closures, Price Hikes Published
Newsweek ^ | 8/10/26

Posted on 08/12/2026 4:45:29 AM PDT by Libloather

The United States Postal Service (USPS) could close thousands of post offices, reduce service levels and raise prices if Congress does not approve legislation to address the agency's financial problems, Postmaster General David Steiner recently warned.

In remarks delivered to the USPS Board of Governors on Friday, Steiner said Congress faces an either-or choice: provide the Postal Service with legislative changes and federal funding to support its public-service obligations or leave USPS to pursue more aggressive measures to reach financial break-even on its own.

"We have peak season coming up, so we would not take any action until after the New Year, but if we can’t get agreement on a legislative package this year, our plans would certainly have to entail changes that will impact service like taking a look at our service levels and closing thousands of unprofitable post offices, as well as raising prices," Steiner said.

His comments come as USPS remains under severe financial pressure despite improving quarterly results, with billions of dollars in annual losses, declining mail volumes and mounting retirement-related obligations straining its cash position. USPS is an independent agency of the executive branch and generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, instead relying on the sale of postage, shipping services and other products.

Newsweek has contacted House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune for comment via email.

Steiner said the Postal Service's existing model places contradictory demands on the agency.

Close it. They have lost four or five letters we have mailed in the past six months.

If a USPS closes, does anyone notice?

All I ever get is junk mail. Packages come by UPS or FedEx. Bills are auto-payed on my computer or phone. No one sends Christmas cards anymore, but if they do, it's electronic and birthday gifts are done on Venmo.

The reality is that we finally figured out how to make the USPS obsolete.

Change or die. Fine with me either way.

Too expensive
Too inefficient
Unreliable
No way we need delivery every single day. Of course I can hear it now, “It will cost more to sort the mail for every-other-day delivery. Too complex.”

Open the door for commercial carriers and watch them compete.

The USPS was a good idea once upon a time but it has become a too expensive play thing

I have a huge mailbox but I hardly ever get a package from Amazon that I don’t have to go to the PO to pick up.

Want to bet congress gives them the money they want and kick the can down the road again?

Did you know that the postmasters at some very small rural post offices are GS-13 greded? That is serious federal employee money. This is fact, a lady at our church was one of them.

Actually, yes. Mailing to a local address will go out to a central location and come back. That's what happened here. They didn't close our post office, just added a layer of complexity.

$40T debt growing exponentially each minute with no end except default in sight.

Assuming the average daily rate of growth over the past three years continues, the U.S. will reach $40 trillion by approximately August 31, 2026.

This reminds me...

Every time one finds the number forty in Torah, its inner meaning is the ascent from one level to the next higher one.

The number 40 as a number that represents transformation.

The number 40 representing significant rebirth and renewal.

We get a new mission at forty. But the attainment of a higher level can come only after first reaching and fulfilling all aspects of the previous level, and then making an emptiness in the middle to allow for the emergence of something entirely new.

Forty, then, represents both the completion of the previous level, and leaving it behind, nullifying it, and forty also represents the inauguration and structuring of a new existence (the Torah given in forty days, the development of the fetus, and so forth).

The Number Forty

And in other related "40" news and information, the @ sign means "at a rate of", but is also used for email addresses and also to direct attention.

Where one is at (40) is where to send the mail:

@
0040 (dec. 64)
COMMERCIAL AT

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/@

Also, the Hebrew letter mem (מ) is the numeral 40 and means water. Thus, related to the integrated topic-at-hand, a common expression is "drowning in debt".

August 31, 2026 is the 18th of Elul:

"Chai Elul" β€” the 18th day of the Hebrew month of Elul β€” is a most significant date on the Chassidic calendar. The founder of Chassidism, Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov, was born on this date, in 1698. It is also the day, 36 years later, on which the Baal Shem Tov began to publicly disseminate his teachings, after many years as a member of the society of "hidden tzaddikim" during which he lived disguised as a simple innkeeper and clay-digger, his greatness known only to a very small circle of fellow mystics and disciples.

No, and that's why they'd be closed.

The feds make sure Postal Service must be cheaper than FDX or UPS. That rule has to go.

Is the USPS still the strategic necessity it was back when Benjamin Franklin organized it?
