For decades, we were told to choose low-fat dairy. New research says otherwise

A new Canadian study led by University of Toronto professor Harvey Anderson adds to growing evidence that full-fat dairy can be part of a healthy diet.

In the 12-week study, 74 adults consumed different amounts of dairy under varying dietary conditions. The researchers found that eating three servings of full-fat dairy per day did not negatively affect body weight, body composition, energy metabolism, or blood lipid levels. The findings were recently published in The Journal of Nutrition.

Why Full-Fat Dairy Has Long Raised Concerns

Dairy foods contain saturated fat, which has traditionally been associated with higher cholesterol and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. As a result, dietary recommendations in Canada and many other countries have typically encouraged people to choose fat-free or low-fat dairy products as a way to reduce saturated fat intake.

Anderson, a professor of nutritional sciences at U of T's Temerty Faculty of Medicine, says the evidence from human research has not always matched those concerns. Numerous human studies have found no link between eating full-fat dairy and harmful health outcomes. Some studies, including recent research led by Temerty Medicine professor Kozeta Milliku, have even reported positive or protective effects associated with dairy consumption.

The only reason I eat egg whites or 2% milk is to cut calories.

This morning I made a veggie scramble with 4 whole eggs, because I didn’t care about the calories and I wanted that taste.

For decades I’ve used only butter and ghee, NO oil whatsoever. Whole milk flows like water in this house. Good it’s not villifed any more.

If God didn’t want us to drink milk He wouldn’t have blessed females with mammaries.

I think the government forces sellers of 2% milk to add retinol to it. I think that's wrong. It might cause excess retinol and that harms bones.

“The human brain is the only organ that runs exclusively on Glucose. “

“On a standard low carb diet, the brain will still largely depend on glucose, the sugar found in your blood, for fuel. However, the brain may burn more ketones than on a regular diet.

On a ketogenic diet, ketones are the primary fuel source for the brain. The liver produces ketones when carb intake is very low.”

I think that is why intermittent fasting, or general calorie restriction generally, so many people report a newfound clarity of thought. I liken the whole concept to engine tuning. Running slightly lean, except when under load. The correct air/fuel ratio analogy. Running “rich” - too many carbs or calories - just builds up sludge and fouls the ignition, etc.

Your husband...Guts! From what animal? Did he eat them often? :o

I had raw milk from a Jersey cow for several years. Mostly tasted creamy. The lady who owned "Jessica" the jersey cow was very careful in feeding it. Apples and pears when available, a lot of grass.

The taste can also be affected by what the cow has been eating.

100%. What’s the last time your doctor asked about your exercise routine or your diet details? Those 2 factors impact most to your health. MD does not stand for doctor of health. It stands for doctor of MEDICINE.

We used to pour the cream off the top of milk in the glass milk bottles delivered to our doors, as I remember from 1951.

I think there’s an old milk bottle around here from those days. We didn’t need delivery, but that persisted in Grand Rapids when I was first living there, in the 1980s. The customers died off.
