Earthquake rocks Yellowstone National Park near supervolcano feared to be overdue for eruption

The US Geological Survey detected a magnitude 3.3 quake at 9.20am ET Thursday morning right along the Yellowstone River inside the Wyoming park.

The minor quake's epicenter was recorded just seven miles from the Yellowstone caldera, the bowl-shaped volcanic depression within the famous national park.

Last year, scientists discovered tens of thousands of previously unrecorded earthquakes which could be hinting that Yellowstone's supervolcano is building up to an eruption.

An international research team used AI to listen to 15 years of Yellowstone recordings and discovered 86,000 tiny earthquakes that human experts had missed. That was about ten times the number of quakes researchers previously believed had taken place.

In the past three weeks, 11 minor quakes have been recorded by USGS in the area around the caldera.

Something that erupts on an “average” of 70,000 with a variance of 10-20k years is not “overdue” for eruption for a long, long time.

Yep, maybe in a million years or so, if that soon.

New Madrid is likely to go off, in a big way, a lot sooner than Yellowstone. They are two different kinds of issues. One is a massive fault line that goes off on a “regular” basis and Yellowstone is a huge caldera that blows off every 70,000-100,000 years.

I learned about New Madrid in college as one that WILL surprise a lot of people, probably in our lifetimes. Yellowstone was taught as a “this happened, but not worth worrying about.”

The story of the big one on New Madrid is fascinating. That lets go again like it did 200+ years ago, and we’re all doomed when the economy collapses, let along the vast physical injury and damage to those directly affected

That looks like something from 1980.

Whether or not the bison should be euthanized is just a matter of comparing two values: the bison’s life compared with risk of further human injury or death.

Government employees are generally not competent to make this decision.

(By the way, all normal pro-bison people would change their opinion if a family member were attacked.)

Is there a vaccine that can stop this?

AI does not have any data more than 1000 years old to work with.

Consider earth has been around for 4,500,000,000 years.

I would think all those little quakes are releasing pressure so the big one doesn’t happen. :-)

Any data before 1875, when the seismonitor was invented is essentially antidotal. Before 1875 records were basically an earthquake happened here on this date, at this time and this is the damage that happened.

Ancient Chinese Earthquake Detector.

Could tell the Chinese from which direction the earthquake occurred.

Approximately 1,000 to 3,000 earthquakes occur each year in the Yellowstone area, with most being too small to be felt.

Approximately 3 to 10 a year are greater than a 3.0.

The Rockies were created by tectonics and it’s still a relatively young (and active) mountain range so there’s no point blaming Huckleberry Ridge every time there’s a tremble.

“(I know California FReepers are like, yawn).”

Correct. In SoCal nobody would even know that a 3.3 had happened. A truck rolling by the house would be about the same.

But the character of the underlying rock makes a difference, and with the right base rock a 3.3 might shake pretty hard.

I’m not sure what underlies the New Madrid fault but the big ones there in 1812 rang bells as far away as Boston and Philadelphia. Estimated around 8.0 magnitude.

The biggest ones I have experienced were Sylmar and Northridge, both around 6.8, and a 7.1 at Ridgecrest.

Those were all very strong quakes and I seriously wondered if Ridgecrest was going to knock the house down. It started strong and kept accelerating. It ran about half a minute but seemed like a whole lot longer.

Yeah. Now those are significant orders of magnitude stronger.

A 7.4 magnitude quake hit southern Mexico today. That should be a thinly populated region so it may not be the disaster that Venezuela is dealing with.

If the next big one hits SoCal maybe it will convince a million or so immigrants to head back home. You have to look for the positives.
