The US Geological Survey detected a magnitude 3.3 quake at 9.20am ET Thursday morning right along the Yellowstone River inside the Wyoming park.
The minor quake's epicenter was recorded just seven miles from the Yellowstone caldera, the bowl-shaped volcanic depression within the famous national park.
Last year, scientists discovered tens of thousands of previously unrecorded earthquakes which could be hinting that Yellowstone's supervolcano is building up to an eruption.
An international research team used AI to listen to 15 years of Yellowstone recordings and discovered 86,000 tiny earthquakes that human experts had missed. That was about ten times the number of quakes researchers previously believed had taken place.
In the past three weeks, 11 minor quakes have been recorded by USGS in the area around the caldera.

But it gives me an excuse to digress and tell my favorite earthquake story. I was attending Santa Clara University and working graveyard at 7-11. Very early, perhaps 3 a.m, I was sweeping the parking lot. Though in the middle of the big city it was dead quiet. I actually heard a baby quake like this one coming. It sound like a train in the distance. I felt the ground rippling under my feet and heard the wave as it rolled away. During the daytime may not have even noticed, but it was a seriously cool experience

Yeah. Earthquakes are surreal. (I know California FReepers are like, yawn). I have experienced a couple from the New Madrid fault in the boot heal of Missouri.

That’s a head-scratcher for me. How do you discover something that wasn’t recorded. Were their reams of seismographic printouts or such collecting in a basement that were left uncatalogued or whatever?

The really big one in Missouri was felt in Boston-1805.

Depending on who was reporting, somewhere between 6.8 and 7.2. But because they build the houses to withstand earthquakes, it wasn’t a big deal
Something that erupts on an “average” of 70,000 with a variance of 10-20k years is not “overdue” for eruption for a long, long time.
3.3 is probably what that grandpa recorded when his ass hit the ground the other day after being bopped by the bison.
