I saw 17 moose on one trip to Isle Royale, and every time I saw them before I heard them. That included walking around the back side of a shelter and almost running into one, I was within easy touching range as I turned the corner.

They are huge. Im 6’1” and I had to look up to make eye contact with the one I encountered in Wyoming. It was easily as large as a good sized horse.
