A man's 'dream property' in Oregon turned into a nightmare after he found more than 50,000 tires dumped on his land.
Khanh Tran, a soon-to-be father, purchased a 1.2-acre property in April where he hired contractors to build his new home in Portland, according to KATU.
Tran had agreed to remove a small pile of about 50 tires on the land, but when he returned in June with a contractor, the pile had become an ocean of rubber.
Footage showed stacks of tires in mountains several feet high that the homeowner estimates are anywhere between 50,000 and 75,000.
'It was a nightmare when I saw it,' Tran told OPB.
'It stressed me out so much. I didn't know what to do. I couldn't sleep for the first few days of that.'
The sea of rubber has sparked a probe by the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating potential trespassing and 'offensive littering.'
Unfortunately, the dumping has delayed Tran's plans, but it hasn't deterred him from fulfilling his dreams.
'I'm not giving up. No way,' said Tran to KGW8. 'This is my home.'
He launched a GoFundMe not only to remove the tires but also to help restore the environment damaged by the thousands of pounds of rubber.
Trans has raised nearly $5,000 as of this report and is aiming to reach its $50,000 goal.
'The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office treats public safety and environmental hazards with the utmost seriousness,' an MCSO spokesperson said in a statement.
He could build a huge “earthship” barn out of them. Kind of a cool building technique in my opinion. Free building materials.

Yup, that's the fix, although I would think the risk of spontaneous combustion can be mitigated by formulation. It doesn't happen so often that the benefits aren't worth the hazard. Further, it turns out that gas mileage on rubberized roads should be a bit better. Economically, that would be a win.
I don't know a better way to handle the problem.

I believe it was the steel plies that caused the issue during oxidation. It is no easy task separating the belts from the vulcanized rubber. Best solution... Start filling up the San Francisco Bay with old windmill blades and old tires. Let them enjoy the monument of trash to remind them they are saving the planet.
Considering the climate in Oregon, the guy could have a real bumper crop. and a decent income. But it would be labor intensive.
Always do a final walk through of any property you intend to purchase. He should have refused to close until the seller removed those tires.
(Did the previous owner have a tire store or something? I hope the police can find videos of the trucks that did the dumping and go after the criminal recyclers or tire retailers who did this. (And put them out of business.))
I dealt with junk tires when I operated my salvage yard
240 a ton and they were gone. About 75 tires made up a ton.

Before I went into the Marines at 18, many decades ago, I worked on a loading dock for a cargo transfer company.
I had to load the big semi trailer with all kinds of goods, including tires. Tires were easy since you laid them on their sides alternating in a zig zag pattern to minimize the room they take up............
The pandering and deceit just oozes out of her. She is the stuff of nightmares.
That was in early days when they first allowed it, so maybe the Asphalt engineers have came up with a better formula/mix design to prevent that from happening again.

ALL states have a law requiring the seller to disclose known defects.
50,000 tires is a known defect. Get the sale set aside.
