A major meat supplier is shuttering two US plant locations, and experts say it’s bad news for carnivores.
JBS USA, a meat-processing company that supplies Costco and BJ’s, as well as grocers such as Food Lion, Weis Markets, WinCo, and Stop & Shop, announced this week that it is closing its operations in Philadelphia and Memphis, eliminating a total of 2,000 jobs.
“These decisions are never easy because they directly affect our team members and the communities where we operate,” said Wesley Batista Filho, CEO of JBS USA.
“We are deeply grateful to the team members at these facilities for their efforts and contributions over many years. Our focus right now is on supporting them with transparency, respect, and access to new opportunities wherever possible.”
According to JBS, which packages, processes, and prepares meat in 15 countries, the shuttered beef plants will be absorbed into other operations.
Earlier this year, JBS announced it was consolidating its beef and case-ready businesses to improve efficiency and enhance productivity.
JBS controls about 20 percent of the slaughtering capacity for US cattle and hogs, according to industry estimates.
Along with Tyson, Cargill, and National Beef, JBS processes about 85% of the nation’s grain-fed cattle.
Although the herd has shrunk to a 75-year low amid record drought levels and higher production costs.

I used to be able to get a darn decent steak at the grocery store...not prime, but darn decent.
The last 4 NY Strips I bought were inedible. So tough I couldn’t get ‘em down.
And they were $22/lb.
I think they’re slaughtering old milk cows and spent bulls now. That meat use to go to McDonalds and Burger King...now they’re cutting it for steaks!
Acme had to divest of all that due to their backing of Wiley E. Coyote.

Bottom line if it increases production I’m ok with it.
the good news is this creates opportunities for local meat processing companies. Lets see how the market responds.
Monopolies are only okay when the government wants them.
My first thought is I wonder if the red-dot Indians coming here in droves has something to do with stopping beef processing. Can’t mess with their sacred cows.
LOL!
They will do no such thing. What they will do is raise prices and lower their operating costs.
That is no guarantee of profits. Unit volumes may fall because of price increases. If there is any improvement in profit margins, it will most likely be directed to raises and bonus payments to executives.
Beef is becoming a luxury good.
Farm co-ops? Family farms are going out of business because they cant compete with the big guys. Farm co-ops are not gonna help.
Clara Peller. We lost a great one.
Are democrats red meat or white like, blah, chicken? lol
Scavenger, like Vulture.
“I wonder why WalMart and Costco don’t own their own meat packing plants.”
Costco makes their own hot dogs.

JBS aka the Batista Brothers is like the Brazilian Mafia. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are acting to hike U.S. beef prices at the request of their Commie President Lula.
More and more of our food supply comes from China, a country with lax industrial safety and few environmental regulations.
I have a beef with this article.
A couple people posted recently that the cost of meat seems to be going down. We shopped yesterday, and the cost of beef is actually higher than it has been over the last year.
This makes no sense. If they don’t lower operating costs, do you think their prices will go down?
