A sheriff's deputy has been fired after allegedly shooting an unarmed Texas freshman dead in his car.
Brazoria County deputy Kevin Tippit was sacked this week following an investigation into the death of John Mendoza Jr, 18, on June 1.
Protests erupted at Texas State University after it was claimed that Tippit fired at the student following a routine traffic stop near Lake Jackson, around 55 miles south of Houston.
Police said Tippit tried to pull Mendoza over when he left a park, but the freshman allegedly tried to flee the scene and led the deputy on a mile-long pursuit.
Mendoza's family dispute the claim he fled police, saying he drove slowly back to his father's nearby home, did not try to evade Tippit, and was shot with his hands in the air before the deputy gave him any instruction.
Mendoza was shot in the garage of his family home, and was pronounced dead when he was taken to hospital. The teenager was not armed, police said.
Following a two-week investigation into the shooting, Brazoria County Sheriff Bo Stallman said he fired Tippit, condemning his actions in a scathing video statement.
'The authority that is entrusted to law enforcement officers is extraordinary, and with that authority comes a responsibility to exercise sound judgment, follow policy and uphold the standards that are expected by this profession,' he said.

“the freshman allegedly tried to flee the scene and led the deputy on a mile-long pursuit. “
THat will get you shot in Texas.
So why the stink?
Illustrates why I would never date a cop. Bully with a badge.
That’s your problem with this event? An unarmed 18 year old does something dumb yet non-violent and gets shot to death by a cop and you want to know why the kid did what he did? Good question. Here’s another. How about why did some idiot with a badge murdered somebody? Does that question occur to you?
“Any relation to Dallas PD officer JD Tippet ?”
That’s what I was wondering.
Excellent post.
The kid’s parents, and society in general, have taught Little Mister Precious that (1) there are no consequences for bad behavior, and (2) police are the enemy.
(Was the kid a POC?)
“I had a deer rifle in my 67 Fairlane my junior and senior years of high school,”
Sounds like the parking lot at my school in the ‘60s. Some in cars, but most in trucks.
Outrageous.
Did this kid have prior arrests?
This kid sounds like he did what the police themselves advise, especially for women., to drive slowly to a safe place. If this report is true., does kid drove slowly to his father’s house ONE mile.
“Why is it then I don’t remember stories like this when I was 18? “
Scads of reasons. Physical, mental, cultural.
Physical. I have two cars that I might have been able to own when I was 18. One is a ‘48 Plymouth flat six. The other is a ‘52 Pontiac straight eight. It would be insane to run from a cop in either car. He could run alongside for the fifty feet. But kids today have cars with unbelievable horsepower. It probably makes them feel invulnerable. “Why should I stop for this guy when I can hit 130 miles per hour.”
Mental. It’s my impression that a couple of decades ago adult thinking occurred at an earlier age. There’s something about the way kids are raised today. When they get out of the school bus all traffic stops for them. Decades ago, a kid was required to look out for his own safety. Near FSU I regularly see kids jaywalk across a four-lane busy street without ever looking up from their phones. Traffic stops for them...mostly. Occasionally, it doesn’t. The point is that they don’t look out for themselves as an adult would look out for his own safety.
Cultural. Oh, gosh...where to start? Everything is arranged in a kid’s life to support his fragile ego. Nobody keeps score. Games like dodgeball are outlawed. Certain words are banned from use so as not to hurt their feelings. The examples are endless. This all combines to prevent a kid from developing skills to handle the real world.
I’ve chosen just a handful of examples. I’ll bet Freepers could produce the longest article response in FR history on this topic.
“Illustrates why I would never date a cop. Bully with a badge.”
Agree. When I lived in FL, I dated a retired Chicago cop. He was a mean SOB. Plus, he stole my diamond earrings and gave them to his daughter as a graduation present. I said nothing; he was too mean.
Neighbor’s Ring cam shows it was a pretty slow 1 mile pursuit...the kid went directly home and parked in the family garage where the officer shot him. Dispatch radio call came in as “accidental discharge”. Chasing a kid a mile home is hardly a “death penalty” offense. Officer Taser/gun mixup again? Officer had his finger on trigger instead of the trigger guard? The police chief saw the writing on the wall quickly and fired the officer. Wrongful death lawsuit incoming.

Freshman in college gets pulled over and slowly drives a mile to his parents house? What a moron.
A documentary we saw re JFK mentioned that Tippett looked so much like Kennedy that his nickname at the station house was “JFK”. Then the conspiracy theory kicked in that it was actually Tippett in the photos of deceased Kennedy.
And then JFK and Jackie went to hide out at the Onassis estate for a few years until JFK died. The reason: They knew that the mob was out to murder him so he faked his own death. Conveniently, his dopperganger happened to be killed the same day.
It was an entertaining little movie.
“Justice” in the courts never undoes the burden the families carry unto their own deaths. Yes, it IS different than when a loved one dies under normal circumstances. Having a life taken from us, literally stolen from us, is different. Its a double tragedy.
Check out the hiring practices for your local constabulary.
They don’t make cops like they used to because for very good reason.
Thanks for the videos...

I’ve been in a “Hot Pursuit”
That was NOT One.
.
Bad Shoot.
"Police are generally permitted to use lethal force only when they have a reasonable belief that the subject poses an imminent danger of death or serious physical injury to the officer or to another person. This standard was further refined in Tennessee v. Garner (1985), which held that deadly force may not be used to prevent the escape of a fleeing suspect unless the officer has probable cause to believe that the suspect poses a significant threat of death or serious physical harm to the public or the officer."
It's not clear what prompted the police to shoot the suspect. Fleeing a policeman is not sufficient justification. If the inquiry finds that the sheriff shot an unarmed suspect who posed no threat to himself or others - the sheriff will be likely be convicted of manslaughter or murder.

Chris Rock

There was an entire
TV show and several movies predicated on the idea of outrunning the sheriff.
Dukes of Hazard, Smokey and the Bandit ring a bell.
The kid did a stupid thing. Not something to get himself killed but to get in a lot of hot water. It could also get the cop in trouble if the family piles out of the house and wants to fight.
In short, the kid did something stupid and sometimes stupid gets you killed. A friend once called this “parking on the railroad tracks of life”
Why would he not do this? I think it was smart.
I’m no freshman in college, but if a cop were pulling me over, I’d put on my hazard lights and slowly drive to a safe place before stopping.
For five years, twice weekly, I’d drive between two towns, 20 miles one way, on a TN back road. I knew exactly where the police stations were at each end in case that situation ever came up. It never did.
