WHEN Was the Last Time You Wrote a Regular Check?
SELF | May 2, 2026 | PJ-Comix

It struck me earlier today that I have NOT written a regular check in years. Yes, I have written a few bank checks but as far as personal checks I can't think of any that I have written any in at least 5 and more likely 10 or more years. At one time in my life and in the lives of many others, writing checks were a frequent activity. However, after the onset of the Internet and doing transactions over the web my check writing activities dwindled further and further until it has reached ZERO except for the few times I needed to write bank checks for the transferal of larger than normal funds.

So WHEN was the last time you wrote a regular check? And are there people here who still write checks frequently? I can't even remember the last time I wrote a regular check and it could have been as long ago as 20 or 25 years.

I write two or three a month on average for various things, but utilities and other expenses are an auto-deduction.

Yes, I agree.

It might also be a generational thing. I bet there are many Gen Zers who have NEVER written a regular check.

I pay for the stamp. I don’t mind the effort. I don’t even think about the effort of writing checks: it’s habitual.

I had to write a check a few weeks ago for $20k when I bought a new car because they wouldn't let me put the entire purchase on my AmEx.

Before that, 2024 when I bought my wife a new car.

I don't like making car payments.

Funny, my checkbook still has my address from 2003 on it and I've probably moved five or six times since them (thanks, Uncle Sam).

I'm 75 and it's been round 9-10 years since I wrote a check, electronic transactions are too convenient.

I also haven't bought a stamp or mailed a bill in that time period either, autopay out of checking or credit card is the convenient way to go.

Of course you need to keep an eye out for fraud too.

I've never really liked it because my handwriting is lousy and often I had to tear up the checks I wrote and write them again in more legible handwriting. So I definitely DON'T miss writing checks.

Not only do I regularly write checks
I use my IBM Selectric II
When I pay off my bank credit card at the bank I regularly get asked by the teller - How did you do that?
I reply - With a Selectric II
I invariably get a blank stare back - the teller having no idea what that is

Common practice here.

I refuse to use auto pay or direct account access for any billing.

I have had my credit card account high jacked four times within 24-48 hours of paying a doctor or hospital bill. Never again. Send me an itemized bill - I’ll mail a check.

Checks, cash or discrete use of credit cards. Or I take my business elsewhere.

Debit cards, online payments, Venmo, PayPal, Applepay, automatic account transfers… not happening here.

As a matter of fact I don’t even pay in cash except to my barber and my footcare nurse, everything else on the old credit card.

I wrote a check for my new car last August. It’s kind of funny that you can write a check for $45,000 for a new Accord, but not $25 for a pair of shoes.

I understand why that is, but it’s still funny.

Last week.

I autopay the routine stuff, but write checks for the one-off stuff.

Ditto! The only check I write every month is the water bill because their online pay system is terrible!

I write a check every month for my rent, and for medical co-pays that don’t have an online bill pay option. I also write checks for birthdays. The majority of my bill payments are through my bank’s online bill pay.

Hell, my wife of 42 years won’t even give me the check book for the joint account.
