WHEN Was the Last Time You Wrote a Regular Check?
SELF | May 2, 2026 | PJ-Comix

It struck me earlier today that I have NOT written a regular check in years. Yes, I have written a few bank checks but as far as personal checks I can't think of any that I have written any in at least 5 and more likely 10 or more years. At one time in my life and in the lives of many others, writing checks were a frequent activity. However, after the onset of the Internet and doing transactions over the web my check writing activities dwindled further and further until it has reached ZERO except for the few times I needed to write bank checks for the transferal of larger than normal funds.

So WHEN was the last time you wrote a regular check? And are there people here who still write checks frequently? I can't even remember the last time I wrote a regular check and it could have been as long ago as 20 or 25 years.

Write a couple of checks every week. They’re not dead yet.

Never pay a “sex worker” with a check.

If you want control of your money, you use cash whenever you can. And HANDWRITTEN CHECKS for bills you can’t pay in person. Credit cards for purchases that need protection like online or you don’t want them to have your bank info.

I have seen many get in over their heads with electronic withdrawal mistakes.

If you don’t want to be on the social credit trap, don’t trust them with all your money and transactions!

Every week for church, twice a year for property taxes, and maybe a half a dozen other times throughout a year for one reason or another. Some people don’t take plastic, and I don’t keep tons of cash on me.

For example, we usually have tree work of one kind or another done around here (very mature, wooded lot) and our tree guy charges us $1000 - $8000 dollars for his efforts, depending on the scope and risk level. I just don’t keep that kind of cash on hand. So he gets a check. Always cashes it that day or the next, depending on how late he worked.

Sometimes a personal check is just the thing.

I’m with you. I pay all utility bills with paper checks and pay bills from my one credit card with paper checks. I certainly don’t use a cell phone to pay for groceries or anything else. I use paper money and coins for groceries. It’s maddening to wait in line in a grocery store behind someone fumbling with a debit or credit card that isn’t being accepted or they can’t remember a pin number or some other foolishness.

I have good handwriting that I learned in elementary school where they taught cursive writing. I like to use it.

Just last week - our local volunteer fire dept. only accepts online donations through Paypal, which I won’t use. So I have to write a check and snail mail it for my annual dues. Also my barber only takes cash or checks, so I write checks there. I’m down to maybe a dozen checks a year - used to write that many per week.

I was paying my estimated quarterly taxes to the IRS by check until last year. They have since made it straightforward to pay online instead so, barring a huge purchase, checks are obsolete for me.

I had to write a check a few weeks ago for $20k when I bought a new car because they wouldn't let me put the entire purchase on my AmEx.

I bought a new car last year. The dealer wouldn't take my check. I had to run over to my CU to get a cashier's check. The dealer wanted to see my credit report to accept my check.

Until he has 10,000 hours and can then pass the journeyman exams, which have a 50% failure rate.

He gets paid weekly and earns more than most journeymen, and he deserves it. He comes with tools, a truck, and works hard.

It would be interesting to ask people, how often do they still use cash , actual paper money and coins? Personally, I use credit cards for the vast majority of retail purchases.

I write checks if it’s a face to face transaction. I won’t mail a check as the USPS around here is terrible for stealing mail and washing checks or it sometimes takes over a month for the mail to get from one side of town to the other.. Post office doesn’t GAS about mail interception or service.

I write checks all the time for both business and personal payments. It is easy and quick. Setting up electronic payments is too time consuming. I don’t want to learn how to do something I can do quicker the old way.

I write checks every month to pay the bills. Don’t always trust auto payment out of my account.
