Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s first city-owned grocery store will be in East Harlem and cost about $30 million, a report said Sunday.
The store will be in La Marqueta, a marketplace under the train tracks running over Park Avenue, and be up and running for business by the end of his first term in 2029, according to the New York Times.
La Marqueta is already owned by the city.
Mamdani was expected to announce the Manhattan market plan at the party he was throwing at a Queens concert hall Sunday to celebrate his first 100 days in office, a milestone that passed Friday.
The store would be the first of five city-owned groceries the mayor made bold promises to build during his campaign.
Mamdani’s proposal for the East Harlem store would eat up nearly half of the $70 million he proposed for the five-store program as recently as February.
His plan was to put one market in each of the five boroughs.
He thinks the move will lower food costs for poorer New Yorkers.

Ahh, the joys of Communism. Get on the waiting list and your new car will be delivered to you, in 10 years Comrade.
Also, this is what happens, when the Gov't, doesn't have to worry about making a profit. If they need money, they can, just, raise taxes on the suckers, dumb enough to stick around.
Just like Obeyme.
Can’t even wrap my head around about spending 30 million to build a single store.
2029 and 30 million
Got to love it😎
First will come the chaotic riots. Then will come the long lines and shortages. Then will come everyone bitching about empty shelves and no one will go anymore.
30 million, maybe not 140 billion but then the whole completed rail wasn’t supposed to cost that much
30 million, we will see😂🤮
I doubt it. Soviet citizens had the patience, forebearance and grim resolve to stand in line knowing the shelves may be empty by the time their turn came. The citizens of East Harlem will have no such self-restraint. Everyday will be black Friday at the Madmani Market.
prediction the federal government is going to have to step in and take over the social services a year from now.
Using taxpayer money to create the illusion that all is going well. It will lose money but the government will continue to keep it functioning.
” and be up and running for business by the end of his first term in 2029”
seriously? THREE years to get one grocery store operational?
“At least Madman isn’t spending $140 BILLION on a grocery store.”
yet ...
it never was a city-owned business: it was a small group of city-owned buildings set up to lease to a multitude of privately owned small vendors and bodegas
“Today, three of the original five buildings that housed the market have been burned or torn down, and a fourth is shuttered.”
apparently the final, not burned or torn down building is currently empty ... probably an empty shell ...
How much are shop lifters allowed to nick from these city-owned stores without criminal charges being applied?
Mayor Zohran Mamdani needs to read four books.
1. “The Tragedy of the Commons” an essay by Garrett Hardin
2. “The Wealth of Nations” by Adam Smith
3. “1984” by George Orwell
4. “Animal Farm” by George Orwell
I did not bother to add “Das Kapital” as I am sure he knows all of Marx’s writing very well, nor “The Gulag Archipelago.” I really do not think he is smart enough to comprehend “The Gulag Archipelago.”
It will probably be massively subsidized, so the shelves will remain stocked. And unlike with privately owned stores, stealing will probably be punished harshly. Maybe they’ll use the traditonal Islamic punishment for thieves.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani is a dedicated Marxist, but he call himself a socialist. He lies.
Oddly, if Marxism actually worked I would be leading the parade with joy. Marxism has two fatal flaws.
1. It does not account for human nature to act in ones self interest and not for the collective. Thus the collective always fails without exception.
2. Consolidation of absolute power at the top invariable leads to corruption and those in power acting in their own self interest. With absolute power at the top they can do anything they want. It always ends in war and death. Since 1917 (the Russian Revolution) Marxism has accounted for about 100 million people killed in war and civilian murder. More civilian murders than death in war.
Stay in your lane, NYPost. The Babylon Bee will handle the satire.
Well said.
