MS NOW host Reverend Al Sharpton said the United States' upcoming 250th anniversary is not a "celebration" for Black people and that it's "crazy" to expect them to celebrate it.
"They're going to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the country July 4th, but that's not our celebration," Sharpton said at the National Action Network’s 35th Anniversary National Convention on Wednesday.
He continued, "We were slaves then, and they celebrate signing the Declaration of Independence 1776. We were not even emancipated until 1863. So I don't know what everybody getting ready for a celebration [for]. You know that it seems crazy for me to have on the birthday hat at your birthday party. That ain't my party."
Sharpton suggested that he should hold a separate rally in Philadelphia and expressed concern that young citizens were not aware of Black people's "background" thanks to President Donald Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., attempting to remove woke aspects in education.
"When White kids hear us talking about reparations or affirmative action, they think it's an attack because they don't know what their granddaddy did to us," Sharpton said.
Sharpton has been a critic of removing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) from businesses and schools, threatening boycotts against businesses that pulled back DEI initiatives since Trump's second term began.
He also accused DeSantis of trying to "erase Black history" after his administration demanded revisions to an AP African American studies course in 2023.
Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, who spoke with Sharpton earlier in the convention, also emphasized the importance of remembering the nation's history with slavery, advocating for the formation of a "Department of Reconciliation" to address it.

We should have picked our own damn cotton!
We’ll never get over that mistake.
Obama is allowed to pontiicate about race but none of his ancestors were slaves in America--but some of his mother's ancestors owned slaves.
Not limited to the "racial issue" (Sharpton's specialty).

Yet the most prosperous and free black people in the world today are black Americans — because they are Americans.
he’s still alive? I had no idea
The only place slavery still exists today is in Africa - including blacks holding other blacks as slaves.
Al once again proves that he is a pathetic racist and race-baiter. His pathetic grift is so obvious. At least he is old.
So black folks aren’t citizens.
Cool, get them off the welfare rolls.
Slavery existed long before the United States was founded and was practiced by many societies throughout history. When the United States was established in 1776, it inherited that system and became deeply divided over it. From the beginning, there were Americans who opposed slavery, while others fought to preserve it. That conflict ultimately led to the American Civil War, and its abolition through the Thirteenth Amendment.
That history doesn’t place personal blame on people living today, but it does show that ending slavery in the United States was not ignored or accepted—it was contested, fought over, and ultimately abolished at great cost.
The American descendants of slaves are better off than the descendants of the Africans who sold them into slavery. Which is why few American blacks want to return to Africa.
He was hanged in Australia and was, by all who kew him, to be a liar and a thief.
Thanks for your kind words though.
As it goes, I’m a really good guy and saved my wife from living in Minnesota with a creep.
I met her after the ‘Wall’ in Germany came down. I was the Bar Manager of the largest resort in Minnesota and had to staff one all-day bar and one Pub (evening only) plus several bar-carts (45 holes of golf, now 63) and multiple portable event bars — one day I had 17 portable bars to staff (with the other obligations) while I had 15 staff, myself included. Tough work at times.
As it was, the Resort hired about 15 East Germans to work over the summer, and as a manager I was asked to be a ‘Big Brother’ to a fellow named Udo.
Udo was short and odd looking. He had a pointed chin a sort of a triangular face - augmented by a blonde afro that accentuated the triangle effect...but he was a good guy.
One day he asked if he could borrow my car (a white Honda hatchback with Ferrari ‘prancing horse’ stickers behind the front wheels and in front of the doors). I gladly lent it to him as I was not getting a day off for another week or so.
Mrs BBB333 had been dating some looser named Chuck and apparently this was the day he decided to ‘stalk’ me...Of course, like any good comedy, he was stalking Udo! He called Mrs. BBB333 later and said: “I can’t believe you left me for THAT guy!”
She called me the next day and asked if I had gone to town ‘yesterday.’
“No” was the reply, then she said someone she knew saw me in town...I mentioned I had lent the car to Udo and she began to laugh! Then told me the story.
We laughed and laughed.
Next year is our 35th anniversary and on Thanksgiving last year we marked our 30th anniversary of living in our small home that we built in ‘95.
Chuck’s mother sent us Christmas cards for almost 10 years, wishing us the best and mentioning new grandchildren fathered out of wedlock by Chuck...Udo gave me a nice piece of concrete from the Berlin Wall covered in graffiti. It’s a treasure.
There is good in all of us as long as we follow a righteous path.
There is no country in history that fought a war to free slaves. This country fought a war to keep Southern money flowing into Northern pockets, and it became so bitter, that when it was over, they freed the slaves, not because it was the moral and proper thing to do, they freed them to hurt the people they had been fighting for four years.
We know they didn't care about the slaves, because before the war started, the Northern controlled congress voted by a 2/3rds margin to keep all slaves in bondage.
This is called the "Corwin Amendment", and it proves absolutely the North did not care about slaves.
The war was over money. The propaganda surrounding the war was over slavery.
Who is Al Sharpton? I never heard of him.
Well done ... and accurate.
Exactly.
“When White kids hear us talking about reparations or affirmative action, they think it’s an attack because they don’t know what their granddaddy did to us,” Sharpton said. My granddaddy didn’t own slaves, friendo.
Don't like it here? Go somewhere else. I mean, black people have it so good in Africa, why stay here?
When does 6% of the population stops killing people?
