Trump Insists Iran War Is ‘Regime Change’ in Morning Call with CNBC’s Joe Kernen
Mediaite ^ | March 23, 2026 | Ahmad Austin, Jr.

Posted on 03/23/2026 7:15:34 AM PDT by Miami Rebel

President Donald Trump on Monday told CNBC’s Joe Kernen that Iran is in the process of regime change following his latest talks with the country.

Moments before their phone call, Trump revealed in a Truth Social post that he had “productive conversations” with Iranian leadership. As a result of those conversations, the president said, there would be a temporary halt to military strikes on Iranian targets. Operation Epic Fury, the operation that began the war in Iran three weeks ago, killed more than four dozen members of the Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Iran, however, said “there has been no direct or indirect contact” with Trump and denied his claims that there were talks.

Following the death of the supreme leader, it was announced that Mojtaba Khamenei — Ali’s son —had been chosen to succeed him. The Trump administration has repeatedly claimed that Mojtaba was seriously wounded in a strike and that his current status is unknown.

Although Mojtaba’s reign was widely considered a continuation of his father’s, Trump insisted the country was undergoing regime change as a result of the war. Reporting on his call with the president, Kernen said:

"I just spoke to the President. President Trump said the discussions have been very good over the last 48 hours, very intense discussions. I said, 'Well, with whom?' I thought, you know, there aren’t a lot of leaders left alive. He said they have representatives. Obviously, that’s been one of the things that Iran has tried to say, that we’ve got a structure more than any one person.

"The President went on to say, or insist, that this is regime change because it’s totally different people that were involved in the last regime. I would imagine some of the people are the same. This is the president’s take on that, insisting that it’s regime change. He went on to say great meetings, great conversations, and hopes that within the next five days something very substantive can be arrived at for the end of hostilities."

I believe he has just agreed to suspend attacks on their power plants, which were never on his target list anyway.

I believe “regime change” was always a key goal, though he has always avoided saying so out loud for political reasons, and to leave himself an out if things didn’t go as he hoped.

Trump’s challenge now is to somehow avoid accidentally killing whoever it is he’s negotiating with now.

OOOOOHHHHH... ‘REGIME CHANGE’
BOOGA-BOOGA!

***** NEWSFLASH *****
IT’S ALWAYS ‘REGIME CHANGE’
IT’S NEVER NOT GOING TO BE ‘REGIME CHANGE’

What’s DIFFERENT is *WHO* is going to end up doing the groundwork to finalize this change.

HINT FOR THE MORONS IN BACK:
IN IRAN, THAT AIN’T US.

The script on the ground has flipped, with IRGC elements embattled and outnumbered by man-on-the-street Persians who know their names and faces and have it in for them. Individuals are peeling away in justifiable fear for their lives and their families even as a condensing core of hard-liners try to sustain the Ayatollah’s fading ethos. That’s a fool’s errand, at this point; it’s no longer “if” but “when” the last monkey falls.

With the current leadership in no position to dictate terms, the endgame — unless they really all want to get smoked — will be a full transfer of power to supporters of the Shah followed by whatever those elements choose for the remnants of the Islamist hardline. Their only hope is to possibly escape execution by taking an extremely reasonable posture. They can never escape the stigma of having supported the Islamist oppression, but they might be permitted to keep breathing, if only within the confines of a prison.

If you have a source saying regime change was a KEY goal, I will consider the context that source provides it for. I recall “regime change” was down the list.

Yeah. BS is right.

For most Freepers, posting something like this might bring some mild recriminations or even some useful discourse to a degree.

From someone like Miasmic Revel who posts content from Mediaite and the NYT on a near daily basis to the exclusion of nearly any other sources, the dimwit likes to play the faux innocent “Oh, I am just posting things for discussion” mode.

"This old man has changed his support towards trump as a negative."

Well, *this* old man believes that Trump has a little more information than I do, and my support for him is unflinching.

The next Joe Biden will be happy to hear about your failed allegiance.

"New boss same as the old boss."

I disagree. The difference between Trump and all other presidents in my 67 years is that Trump might .. might .. actually care for *me*.

I'm sticking with Trump through thick and thin!

PANIC: Iran Folds as Trump Cuts London’s Hidden Hand Over Global Oil

https://www.youtube.com/@PrometheanAction

Get our FREE Newsletter at https://www.PrometheanAction.com — Barbara Boyd argues that most commentary on the Middle East misses the economic dimension: after U.S. energy independence, Trump is targeting the City of London’s long-standing influence over global energy pricing. She cites Trump’s Truth Social warning to Iran over the Strait of Hormuz, subsequent negotiations, and a five-day extension, contrasting media reactions with what she calls London and Wall Street interests. Boyd says Britain is facing an economic emergency as energy and borrowing costs surge, while Gulf states shift trillions in investment toward the U.S. and a “Board of Peace” focused on development and modern energy. She claims the true Hormuz choke point is London’s marine war-risk insurance, noting Lloyd’s cancellation led to an 81% traffic collapse, and frames current events as a struggle between empire and sovereign nations.

I have no source. This is just my view. First, if this war ends with IRGC still in power, it will have been a failure. I don’t believe Trump has any intention of accepting failure. You can see the intent in the way they have massacred IRGC leadership and then done it again. It is targeted and intentional. They have no intention of leaving the previous regime alive to negotiate anything.

Meanwhile, they are telling the people to stay inside until we have made it safe for you to come out and take control of your country. He needs for the regime change to look like it is organic, not something imposed by us. But you can bet we have people on the ground working that problem. Money may well be changing hands. The regular army generals seem not to have been targeted, so that may be for a reason.

I suspect he is thinking in terms of his Venezuela model, where he identifies people in the regime he can work with for some kind of interim government. They can even chant “death to America” as long as they do his bidding. So we’ll see. You may think I am too optimistic and you could be right.

Yeah, I watched a few segments on YouTube and I think you're right. When I read the article, I thought he was suspending all attacks.

I was referring to all the dead Ayatollahs (old boss) being replaced by new bosses, not Trump.

Please summarize it. Does it speak to regime change?
