Cesar Chavez is disappearing across California.
Statues are coming down, street names are being stripped, and murals are being covered up in a rapid-fire backlash against the once-revered labor leader, as officials move to distance public spaces from a legacy now under scrutiny.
In San Fernando, a statue of Cesar Chavez was removed Thursday, while at Santa Ana College, murals and other campus imagery bearing his likeness have been covered. In Fresno, city leaders unanimously voted to strip Chavez’s name from a major boulevard, restoring its original designation, a dramatic reversal of a tribute that once symbolized pride in the civil rights icon.
Symbols that once cemented Chavez’s status as a civil rights hero are being dismantled piece by piece — following stunning allegations that he raped and molested two girls beginning at the age of 12 and raping his longtime ally, Dolores Huerta.
From city halls to college campuses, what was once celebrated in bronze, painted on walls, and stamped onto street signs is now under review, with more institutions expected to follow suit.
For decades, Chavez was widely celebrated as the co-founder of the United Farm Workers, a labor movement icon who championed the rights of farmworkers and became a symbol of Latino political empowerment.
But newly surfaced allegations about his sexual misconduct have prompted public officials to reconsider decades of honors tied to his name.
Across the state, officials cite community concerns and public accountability as reasons for removing statues, renaming streets, and covering murals.

You are correct -- these allegations have been around for many years but were suppressed because of his iconic status. The reason for them being trumpeted now is his stance on illegal immigration.
Chavez was an ardent opponent of illegal immigration, because it depressed the wages of the farm workers he represented and fought for. He and his followers were very rough on illegals, often physically confrontational and worse.
So today's Left has to cancel him because they need illegal immigration to remain politically powerful. He's no longer useful, indeed he's become a political liability.
So he's gotta go. It's as simple as that.
Sometimes FR comments are more important than the article.
I am thinking there must be some really strong evidence that has not been released to the public.
Evidence that may have been concealed for decades.
Yep my thought exactly. The rest of the hucksters to follow.
Allegations long after he’s dead?
Not that I admire him, but the reaction seems extreme based on mere allegations.
On the other hand, I guess it’s the same reaction the left had to mere decades old allegations against now Justice Kavanaugh.
I’m stunned. He was such a Latino icon.
Eight years ago (2014) President Barack Obama proclaimed March 31st as Cesar Chavez Day. I wonder what the day will be renamed to this year? Party City is going to be pissed.
Wha??? Someone quote him speaking the N-word?
Dodger Stadium sits in Chavez Ravine. So-named for Julian Chavez but still, woke mob’s cry to rename in 3-2-1 . . .
Another democrat hero bites the dust. Tomorrow they’ll invent another.
Why?
What makes you think this is related to his views on illegal immigration?
Will Chavez sexually abusing girls make Democrats more apt to vote in the upcoming election? Make Republicans more apt to vote in the upcoming election?
Just not seeing the connection for someone that died 33 years ago.
How would his stance on illegal immigration have anything to do with it?
That was known for 50+ years.
His extramarital affairs were known about and mentioned in a biography.
It sounds like researchers came across evidence in his papers that were donated that led to further investigation. A note from a 13-year old girl is pretty damning.
He didn't need to rape anyone, especially not in the free love 1960s and 1970s in the Bay area. More like he had to beat them off with a stick. All he had to do was snap his fingers if he wanted.to
I'm calling BS on this. More likely that Huerta is jealous that Chavez has become a historical icon and nobody knows or cares who Huerta is . Huerta no doubt feels that she has been left behind by history and wants to tear Chavez down and build herself up a civil rights icon
I don't see a lot of Huerta Boulevards or government buildings dedicated to Huerta And for good reason too. She was a very unpleasant woman and prototype for our current generation of AWFULs
Frankly, Chavez is being done a great injustice.
Unlike self promoting “civil rights icons” like Jesse Jackson, Chavez was the real deal.
Love him or hate him, Chavez was sincerely devoted to his Farm Workers, who were genuinely exploited by many in the California agribusiness community and he measurably did improve their lives and working conditions.
If you are going to put activist's name on a road or a building, Chavez legitimately earned the right to be there. Now that the Jacobians in the modern Progressive Left have run out of Revolutionary and Civil War statues to teardown , they are now tearing down their own heros and history .
Has SF changed the name of Cesar Chavez Street back to Army Street yet?
> Why? What makes you think this is related to his views on illegal immigration?
For the same reason the Left cancels the Founders and past Presidents because they were slave owners. Judging the past by the current narrative.
The Left needs illegal immigration. Chavez was strongly against it, sometimes violently against illegals. So his influence must be crushed. Doing so using the actual objection (illegal immigration) is subject to argument, but doing so using sexual abuse is guaranteed to work, no one will stand up for that. So he gets canceled, and no one objects.
> Will Chavez sexually abusing girls make Democrats more apt to vote in the upcoming election? Make Republicans more apt to vote in the upcoming election?
I have no idea what those influences might be, especially since they're 7+ months from now.
Guess I don’t understand the influence he still has.
Seems to me that he’s being cancelled because he groomed young girls and sexually abused them.
He has schools, streets, civic buildings, parades, and a California holiday named for him. His influence as a civil rights icon is huge -- comparable to that of Martin Luther King Jr -- in the California growing regions, and indirectly throughout the country. He is revered in the Latino community, which is very large.
Having his name plastered all over southern California, and known elsewhere like MLK's, is very influential.
> Seems to me that he’s being cancelled because he groomed young girls and sexually abused them.
Yes, undoubtedly so, especially among those who revered him for his civil rights work and ignored the stories for the past many years about his grooming and sexual abuse. But until recently those stories were suppressed because he was a famous revered icon.
Now his views on illegal immigration have become an embarrassment and a problem to the Left. He must be canceled and crushed.
That’s what Communists do...
