Ozempic Is About to Go Generic for Billions of People In India, China and several other nations, Novo Nordisk is on the verge of losing patent protection for its blockbuster weight loss drug, opening the door for cheaper competing versions.

The blockbuster weight loss drug sold as Ozempic and Wegovy will soon go generic in countries that are home to 40 percent of the world’s population, significantly lowering the price of a costly medicine that had been largely unaffordable to nearly all but the wealthiest people.

...On Saturday, Novo Nordisk, the company that until now has had a monopoly on selling the drug, will lose patent protection in several of the world’s most populous countries. The first generic versions are expected to arrive in India as soon as this weekend. In the coming months, the generics are also expected to become available in China, Canada, Brazil, Turkey and South Africa. ...The expiration of the patents presents more trouble for Novo Nordisk, whose stock has plummeted as global competition has eroded its market share. At its peak in mid-2024, the Danish drugmaker was the most valuable public company in Europe.

Eli Lilly, an American company that sells its weight loss drug as Mounjaro for diabetes and as Zepbound for obesity, poses the biggest competitive threat. Eli Lilly is expected to retain patent protection for another decade in most major markets.

Another magic pill that people will take forever once they are on it rather than use discipline once they lose the weight and gain it back or better try discipline first and see what happens. Yes, I am aware some people have a hormonal or other issue that affects this effort.

Ozempic? India?? I’m old enough to remember ads asking for donations to supply food for Indians. One with Jimmy Stewart starter with him saying “ The monsoon dixn’t come this year.” And now they need Ozempic.

Stop eating so much. That’s where the problem lies...and get off your butt and take a walk every day.

LOL...

Ozempic to be sold off label in China and India.

Because...

Fat people are the first thing every one thinks about when they hear the words China and India?

For people in India and China? Isn’t that sort of like selling snow cones to Eskimos?

Re: "Another magic pill that people will take forever..."

A medical study just came out that claims those who STOP taking Ozempic have substantially higher risk factors for heart and blood vessel diseases and diabetes.

Those people are going to be so weak! Low protein diets, combined with muscle degradation caused by GLP-1. No way they will do strength training, which is absolutely critical when taking that.

You couldn’t pay me to mess with that crap.

Strength training plus 1.0-1.2 G protein per kg body weight are essential with or without that class of drugs if you want to preserve muscle as you age.

A newspaper article I read today, paywalled, says between India and China there are 800 (not 80) million obese. That’s quite a market!

My father-in-law takes it for diabetes. He has lost about 30 pounds. He has chronic, unpredictable diarrhea. He won’t get on another drug.

two Decembers ago I weighed 213 pounds.
I was 60. I am 5’ 9” tall.

I started intermittent fasting. Meaning after Sunday dinner I do not eat until Tuesday morning. Then back to normal.
Then again on Wednesday after dinner I do not eat again until Friday morning. The weekend I eat normally.

I dropped just below 200 pounds in the first month. Then eventually under 190. I have seen as low as 178. Although, my weight has stabilized in the 180-187 range. Eat like a pig and I can get back up to 189 real fast.

Today I was 180. I should be 179 or less tomorrow. I drink one black coffee and a liter of flavored water with an Ultima Electrolyte packet(zero sugar, zero calories).

Along with my weight loss my Cholesterol, blood sugar, triglycerides and all the other bad blood things are down.
I have dropped two belt holes. I am wearing 36” pants and may be able to get into 34” again soon. I was wearing 38”.

My wife is also doing it. It helps to have a partner.
This is the ONLY way I have been able to shed weight since I was 35. I hate going to the gym. I am active around the house. I downhill ski in the winter. I will be skiing tomorrow at this time.

I am NOT taking ANY drugs. No statins. No GLPs. No Blood Pressure meds. No poisons (except beer, rum, vodka, bourbon, gin, tequila, Lemonchello, champagne, red wine). FASTING IS EASY. All you have to do is stop eating. Nothing else.

Take Ozempic, lose weight, FEED your vanity.

We are quite fortunate to live in age of life saving and life extending “miracle drugs”.

These weight loss drugs aren’t that.

What are the long term effects the use and abuse of these drugs?

We are going to find out as all of Hollywood has volunteered as laboratory animals.

Ozempic is for obese people where no side-effect is worse than being obese.
