Ozempic Maker Sued After Woman Died From Stomach Paralysis
Newsweek ^ | 3/12/2026 | Kate Plummer

The maker of Ozempic, Novo Nordisk, has been hit with a lawsuit over allegations of wrongful death after a woman using the drug died from gastroparesis, a condition also known as stomach paralysis. Novo Nordisk denied the allegations.

Marsha Ettinghoff, 76, who had been taking the weight loss drug for six months, died from stomach paralysis, a condition where food passes through the stomach slower than it should, in August 2024 after feeling ill on holiday, attorneys representing her husband, Tracy Ettinghoff said. The attorneys, from the law firm Motley Rice, said the couple believed she had food poisoning after Ettinghoff experienced nausea and vomiting and said doctors prescribed her antibiotics and anti-nausea medications.

But after a few days, Ettinghoff complained she felt as if she had stuff regurgitating in her throat, Motley Rice said. They said her son then found her struggling to breath and as her family drove her to hospital she aspirated on her vomit and died.(snip)

Ettinghoff's family filed a lawsuit alleging that Novo Nordisk knew or should have known the risks posed by GLP-1 RA medications, including severe gastrointestinal complications and other injuries, but failed to update their warnings and labeling to adequately inform doctors and patients," Jonathan Orent, a Motley Rice attorney said. "They had a responsibility to disclose what they knew, and they didn’t."

Graveyards and crematoriums. Survivors are experiencing bad side effects. I have several family members with side effects affecting them.

"I thought this was a known potential risk—not likely, but possible."

Yup, it's on the warnings/side effect list for all GLP-1 drugs.

When diagnosed with CKD I was told to loose weight. I tried everything, more than 5 lbs was impossible. I finally lost 25 lbs thanks to Mounjaro but that was my goal weight and I stopped taking it, per Dr instructions. That 2 month treatment was all it took to reprogram my eating habits. I do fluctuate by up to 3 lbs once in a while, but I can work that off and it's a wake-up to watch my eating. Most people can't be bothered to listen or read when taking powerful medications.

“People are still dying from that shot.”

With regard to COVID-19 distribution and overall population mortality trends, there was no difference in non-COVID-19 mortality between those who were or were not vaccinated as the pandemic worsened in 2020 and 2021 in the United States. For example, a report from the U.S. Vaccine Safety Datalink (Xu et al., 2021) found that vaccine recipients have lower mortality than those unvaccinated.

Well, that was judgmental and rude. Diets do not work for everyone. I lost 30 lbs. on Weight Watchers, but I have been on a plateau for thee months.

Weight isn’t just diet and exercise. Genetics, metabolism and any medication can affect it. People shouldn’t be judgmental if they don’t know the whole story.

Exactly. There are so many factors that go into losing weight. Age is a major one

Oh, yes. I took it for a few months. Totally locked up my lower digestive track.

It’s a real threat imo since toxins build up fast and harm the kidneys. Even fasting doesn’t stop it.

Enemas, stool softeners and even Epsom salt drink are needed. I recommend having plenty on hand before starting.

The effects on digestion can continue for weeks or months after you stop using it.

So many negative cases are being revealed due to this drug. I’m shocked that RFK is a proponent of its use.

That sounds like my journey. I’ve gone through distinct phases. Around December, after losing 20 pounds, I plateaued. I then cut out lots of carbs, cut out all alcohol, switched to keto cereals for breakfast, amped up protein, and really began looking at added sugars. Now I’m three pounds away from my target and am easing up a bit moving into maintenance mode. I use a Bioelectrical Impedance Scale (Omron) to track weight, fat and muscle. I was doing daily weigh-ins for months, but backed off to every other day. I use MyFitnessPal to log every single bite of food. I keep a kitchen scale handy and measure every food on it. Weighing and Logging are a pain, but it slows me down and makes me more thoughtful about what I am eating. I’ve found over the years that logging is the key to success for me.

I also started taking psyllium husk powder which fills me up and adds lots of fiber.

Long term diabetics are prone to gastroparesis without Ozempic. Could have been caused by both situations.

Ozempic is poison. I was on it for three weeks and I was sick every damn day and couldn’t keep food down, Diarrhea and splitting headaches made it impossible to keep on taking it. GLP-1 is the same GD thing.

You can normally lose weight by doing one thing: not eating as many calories as you can burn in one day. But taking a pill seems to be so much easier.
