The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
In the past I have purchased 10” pots with various forced spring bulbs in them, for something cheerful to look at while I’m waiting for Spring. Then after they’ve finished blooming, I remove the bulbs, let them dry out, and plant them in the ground in the fall.
So far it has worked wonderfully for a few bare spots on our front walkway. Crocus, muscari, small daffodils, hyacinths, and a couple of tulips were in that planter. I did that a few years ago, and it looks like most everything is coming up again! I haven’t seen another planter like that offered so far this year, and they’re usually offered right about now. I’m guessing that was a one off. Wish they would do that again. I would buy several of those if I could find them.
That is a pretty garden! I love all the bellflowers, foxglove, and peonies in that photo. Plus lavender! Must be heavenly to walk near!
Very nice!
A few years back, we had a stretch of a few years when bulbs besides the Daffodils did well at coming back each spring. The Gladiolus and Day Lilies later on were glorious too! But, then squirrels started eating a lot of bulbs besides the Daffodils and Day Lilies. The old dog who used to come over from a neighbor’s place, spend most of his daytime(s) here (maybe we were just nicer to him?) and act as a guard for everything from our chickens to the trash cans to the garden and bulbs in the yard, died, and ever since I’ve had running wars with the squirrels and other varmints. We didn’t feed that dog much, but he sure was a good old fellow to have around...
“But things look to be turning a permanent corner tomorrow”
I like your optimism.
I put off Menards til next week Wednesday. Hoping they will have some plants out.
Well, until October, at least......
The next 10 days on the Weatherundergound forecast look good and puts us solidly into April.
But I do realize that we’re not done with the snow until Mother’s day has passed.
I do not know if sugar would do it...this....along with dozens of other recipes...is on my sometime in the future cooking and baking schedule!
(You could also use your lemons to make the Double Lemon Chess pie further back on the thread!)
We got a bit of badly needed rainfall here in Central Missouri Thursday night/Friday morning.
Spent yesterday on the couch after spinal injections in the morning. I’m feeling a little beat up but generally better than I was before the shots. I expect it will feel quite a bit better once the steroid meds kick in. Disability claim has been filed and everything looks good there so that’s a load off my mind. I’ll take it mostly easy today but I do hope to get a little something done outdoors this afternoon.
Neighbor kid dropped off a gallon ziplock bag full of spoonbill filets a couple days ago. I’m going to fry that up for supper this evening, along with some potato nuggets and fresh asparagus from the garden.
Pete - I’ll have to check that out! My dad loved lemon meringue - not my favorite..
I did make lemon curd and everyone loved it. I have so many lemons right now they’re falling off the tree and I can’t keep up.
Squirrels got my oranges! Little buggers...
Temps slightly above normal, and the normal amount of rainfall will be just PERFECT for my growing season.
Famous Last Words, LOL!
Our Menard’s had a full selection of herbs, but they were still inside on racks.
There were also a few ratty-looking racks that obviously got left out in the cold.
Retail Manager Hat On: “Come on, People! We do NOT show damaged merchandise to the customers! EVER! Get it back on the dock or into the dumpster if it’s too far gone!”
I had employees that would try to ‘save’ every little plant in a 4-pack that was ailing. I showed them how to re-arrange the 4-packs so EVERY cell had a viable plant. I broke a lot of them of the habit of trying to, ‘save every starfish on the sand’ but I had a few that just could not do it, LOL! I let them take home those ailing plants for free just to get them OUT of the store!
Loss is a legitimate write-off in ‘The Biz’ when you’re selling anything with a limited shelf-life. You wouldn’t buy bunch of bananas with one rotten one in the bunch, would ya?
You let the WHOLE bunch go bad at home so you can bake Banana Bread, LOL! :)
Oh, Augie! Please allow yourself enough rest and I sincerely hope this gives you some welcome relief! Use Howard as a heating pad if need be, LOL!
I’d be more jealous of the free fish if I hadn’t found a bag of tasty, tasty Bass fillets in the freezer the other day! ;)
Squirrels... your cat cannot go outside and your dog does not climb trees!
Down to 26° last night and no wind (after a very windy day). Looking across the fields this morning, we got frost. Very glad I covered up the hostas.
Your poor Hosta! ;)
It actually warmed UP overnight. Yesterday was very windy (typical March for us) and chilly. Today I should be able to more comfortably take care of outside things on my list. Yesterday I just puttered indoors.
Looking forward to some SUNSHINE on my face today, though my Dermatologist no longer recommends that. ;)

Found a ham hock from last years hog in the freezer the other day. Thawed it out overnight. Today I am making Southwest Chicken Chili in the crock pot. I predict it smells VERY GOOD in here this afternoon. :)

I finally put a squirrel baffle on my Bird Buddy bird feeder - has a camera on it so I can see the birds from my phone!
I could not keep the squirrels out no matter what I tried - the baffle was the only thing that worked - seems the squirrels are no longer interested in my yard and have moved on - so maybe this coming year I’ll get a few oranges and pomegranates.
Last year, the squirrels ripped through the netting my neighbor placed over his pomegranates trees, including ripping the netting on each pomegranate. He didn’t get a one.
There are ninja squirrels here!
Big QUESTION.
I have 3 tomato plants from Walmart and a six pack of their sweet peppers, I feel lazy and want to put them in the ground tomorrow and while the temperatures are a couple of weeks cooler than perfect, they are acceptable with nights a little cooler than optimum.
MY QUESTION IS-—, if I feel nurturing enough to repot all of these into slightly bigger pots like I normally would to let them grow larger and healthier, and stronger before putting them into the ground, how long would I have to delay putting them into the ground, I’m impatient, I might be willing to give them two weeks but would being repotted and then only having 2 weeks to recover, be long enough, or should I just put them in the ground like I feel like doing?
