Elon Musk took to X on Sunday to claim two-time Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan “has lost his integrity” while debating Lupita Nyong’o’s speculated role in “The Odyssey,” Helen of Troy.
On Sunday morning, one X user claimed that if Nyong’o plays Helen of Troy, it is “an insult” to the Greek poet Homer, who wrote “The Odyssey” around 700 BCE, because he originally described the fictonal character as “fair skinned, blonde, and ‘the face that launched a thousand ships’ because she was so beautiful that men started a war over her.” Musk later commented on the post, “Chris Nolan has lost his integrity.”

Gaaaa....she’ll be worse than the woke Snow White.
Which sort of means ‘woke’ is actually ‘dead.’
Helen of Bok Choy
You know what else causes the movie to lose its historical integrity? The actors speaking English. There will be a million anachronisms in the movie and million fictional aspects in it too. All movies reflect some modern sensibilities whether we want to believe it or not. So if this black actress does a good job portraying Helen, so be it. If she does a bad job, then Nolan made a bad choice.
Speaking of odysseys, Monica was the face that launched a thousand subpoenas.>
If you think these acts of intellectual depredations are “stupid and inconsequential,” you are part of the problem.
Similar to those who don’t vote in the mid-terms b/c they are unimportant.
Consider myself a film buff if one can do so by skipping much of what has come out in the 21st century.
The only two Nolan directed films that I have seen are The Prestige and the Dark Knight.
They were okay and I that may be unfair to the Dark Knight as I have comic book hero movie fatigue.
I remember watching Ulysses with Kirk Douglas on TV when I was in junior high.
I thought it was “cool” and particularly remember when he finally made it home and starting throwing axes at Penelope’s squatting suitors.
Helen of Troy has the range of a rental car. She's a character in the Iliad but also appears in Book 4 of The Odyssey, featured briefly when Telemachus visits her and Menelaus in Sparta. You knew that, I presume.
A movie is supposed to be a visual representation of a story. Homer does describe Helen’s appearance. It’s an important part of the story. If Homer hadn’t described her than an attractive sub-Saharan African would be fine. If the visual aspect of the story is unimportant might as well do it as a radio performance.
“ There will be a million anachronisms in the movie…”
The best anachronism is the deliberate one from Monty Python “Holy Grail”
Where they constructed the wooden Trojan horse using chainsaws.
No one will watch it but it will win lots of awards!
He sees erasing Western Civilization, its race, its nations, and its place in the world, as serious stuff.
Exactly.
To expound on a point I made in an earlier post, I don’t automatically have a negative reaction to “race swapping” of historically white roles. There have been plenty of cases where a minority actor has been placed in a historically white role purely for political / ideological reasons and that is wrong and usually turns out to be a disaster. But I also accept that a director may have a vision for a role that involves a certain actor or actress who is not white and I accept that the director should be allowed to have the freedom to cast who he or she wants. That is part of artistic freedom. There are many non-white actors who are excellent - for instance, I’d watch Denzel Washington in pretty much any role.
If we didn’t live in a country where the elites call for a war against white people, and a regular “random” rape, assault and/or murder of whites by blacks occurs weekly...
There’s a whole bunch of female characters in the Odyssey, why is Elon obsessing a walk on that might or might not be in the movie and might or might not be who this lady is cast as? Really looks like Elon just felt like getting his panties in a twist.
And in the rest of real life as well, I hate to say.
Hate to say it, don’t care who plays what.
