Costco Accused of Deceiving Shoppers Over Popular $5 Rotisserie Chickens
New York Post ^ | Jan. 28, 2026 | Ariel Zilber

Posted on 01/28/2026 5:08:42 PM PST by nickcarraway

Some Costco customers are crying fowl over the big-box chain’s popular $4.99 rotisserie chickens, saying they contain preservatives in spite of the company’s claims to the contrary, according to a new lawsuit.

Two California-based people say Costco “has systematically cheated” consumers “out of tens — if not hundreds — of millions of dollars” by advertising the poultry as being free of preservatives.

The class-action lawsuit, filed last week in San Diego federal court, alleges that Costco makes the claim despite the fact that the rotisserie chickens contain sodium phosphate and carrageenan.

I think the damages will be five cents per class action member.

Or One Dollar and Nine Cents.

neither sodium phosphate nor carrageenan are preservatives ... sodium phosphate is an emulsifier, stabilizer, pH buffer ... carrageenan is a cheap thickener used in cheap dairy goods [though it’s known to cause gut inflammation] ...

carrageenan is bad news, and high-quality foods don’t use it, e.g., daisy brand dairy products, high quality yogurts, and haagen daz ice cream, which uses NO thickeners of any kind because they use enough milk fat in the ice cream that they don’t need to artificially thicken it, unlike practically every other commercial ice cream in the USA ...

all that crap and much more are on the costco rotisserie label, so it’s a bullshit lawsuit, but being in california, some judge will probably fine costco a gazillion dollars anyway ...

Costco’s chickens have so many uses I would hate to see some greedy lawyer shutting the whole production down. I notice that Costco has prepared meals using their chicken that was not sold. Their Chicken Pot Pies, Chicken Alfredos, and Chicken Soups are very tasty and inexpensive. Costco provides chicken for a home cooked meal that helps those who lack the time to prepare it themselves.

I’ve eaten one of those chickens almost every day for the past five years. At no point did I think they didn’t have preservatives in them.

You can make Michelin quality Chicken stock by cutting one up bones and all and throwing it into an instantpot for an hour with an onion, carrot, celery and enough water to hit the max fill line!

Soylent green additive.

Even my salmon from Trader Joe’s says “color has been added.”

The seasoned, roasted chickens are $5 but the raw chickens are $9. I try not to ask myself why.
