A transgender Oregon lawmaker died after suffering internal bleeding from stomach ulcers that her doctor said were brought on by stress linked to her job and a bitter recall election, according to family members and friends.
Claire Hall, a longtime Lincoln County commissioner, collapsed at her home in Newport late on January 2 and was rushed to a hospital in Portland where she died two days later at the age of 66 after doctors were unable to stop the hemorrhaging.
Her death came just days before voters were set to decide whether to remove her from office in a highly charged recall campaign that had drawn tens of thousands of dollars and inflamed political divisions across the coastal county.
Hall was one of Oregon's most prominent openly transgender elected officials.
'People kept kicking dirt, and she was prepared for it, but her body was not,' said Georgia Smith, a friend who previously worked in health care in Lincoln County, to The Oregonian.
Hall's death came just days before voters were set to decide whether to remove her from office following a highly charged recall campaign that had drawn tens of thousands of dollars and inflamed divisions in the coastal county.
The recall election had become increasingly contentious, fueled by disputes over funding at the district attorney's office, limits on public comment, and Hall's clash with another commissioner accused of workplace harassment.
Recall supporters said the effort was bipartisan and focused on governance, not identity.
Lincoln County District Attorney Jenna Wallace, who signed the recall petition as a private citizen but was not part of the campaign, said the effort had nothing to do with Hall's gender.
'The recall was about her conduct as a commissioner, not her gender identity,' Wallace said.

Recalled
Ulcers, another tool of right wind supremacists.
I’d say it’s both.
Maybe the uterus wandered from very far away.
So much for Socialized Medicine.
They seem to be a bit behind on there medical knowledge.
Laymen in America know better.
Previously worked in health care is a euphemism for being a receptionist at a Dermatologist practice. Clearly qualified to determine cause of death.
I live in SW Oregon and usually keep up with lesbian gov kotek's antics.
Fortunately, I've never heard of this "prominent" sicko.
As a sidenote, kotek's attempt at the largest tax increase in Oregon's
history has been shot down by the citizen's initiative, so far.
He collapsed in his home.
“...I want to say it but out of respect for the dead I won’t.....”
I’ll say it: It belonged in an asylum where it could be properly treated for it’s insanity, NOT in government.
I’ll say it... one ugly azz mentally sick POS is dead. Society is better off and especially “it’s” workplace.
The vapors.
All of them. This state is run by nuts.
That’s what I was thinking: we still don’t know the longterm effects of the meds they take to transition.
“Her death came just days before voters were set to decide whether to remove her...”
Why I don’t go to DM, NYP, others because their people are too damned dumb and programmed to know the difference between a girl and and a boy.
Said another way, they are purporting a falsehood that makes them liars and promoting mental illness as well.
It is sad when someone dies...even a seriously mentally ill man.
“..her doctor said were brought on by stress linked to her job and a bitter recall election, according to family members and friends.”
The doctor might try doing a little research. Stomach ulcers are not brought on by stress. They are infections made worse by stress. In this case the stress was brought on by trying to make believe he was a woman and not the biological male he was. Either way, my prayers are up for him and his family.
That or Helicobacter pylori.
If you would like more information about what’s happening in Oregon, please FReepmail me. Please send me your name by FReepmail if you want to be on this list.
I remember years ago, when a friend's daughter was suffering from unresponsive ulcer medical treatment, that a suggestion to check the treating physician for Helicobacter was reluctantly tested.
The subsequent prescription resulted in the daughter's remission of ulcers within 2 weeks.
I haven't had a third ulcer (it's been about 20 years since the last one).
