January 2026 Snow Storm

Posted on 01/22/2026 5:14:26 PM PST by Jamestown1630

Nobody seems to have begun a thread for the snowstorm that is forecast for this weekend, so I thought I would.

Where I live (DC Metro area) a big snowstorm is relatively rare. We're the ones who don't really know how to drive in it because we don't get a lot of practice; and we also crowd the grocery store and wipe out the shelves - often for stuff we don't really need, and for a forecast that doesn't amount to much but flurries.

But once in a while, we really get whacked; and I think this may be one of those times. (My husband grew up in the wilds of Pennsylvania, and laughs at what we consider 'getting whacked' down here.)

I'm hoping we get lots of snow, and little or no ice; and hope everyone will be safe.

Let us know what you are doing to prepare, if you live where it might hit.

Needs a carton of eggs and some syrup - at least French toast would be on the menu.

We’re garaged, and don’t need to go anywhere until next week. But thanks for the generous offer.

My last year living in Arlington we had the Blizzard of 1966 which dumped 2-3 feet of snow in one giant storm.

Just two inches could bring everything in DC to a dead stop and this did it for days. A Washington Post delivery driver simply gave up and abandoned his truck in the middle of our street and walked home. Probably a wise choice.

We had had other big snows before but this was the biggest that I remember. An earlier one in maybe 1957 knocked our power out and the only heat in our house was the gas oven. At least in 1966 we didn’t freeze.

I remember that one. The snow was really, really deep -- I was just 5 years old.

As I’m at the grocery store preparing for Armageddon, Boomer entitlement is at an all-time high. Taking up entire aisles, leaving unwanted items discarded in random places, and cutting in line, are just a few of the observed behaviors of the Boomers.

I remember that one.

My husband and I were just talking about our favorite memories of snow; and we both loved the way it made everything so quiet. But one thing I really miss is the occasional jingle of tire chains on cars going by. We never hear that in this area anymore.

Grew up in a small town in Northern Virginia called Falls Church. During the 50’s and early 60’s a foot to a foot and a half happened a couple of times a year. Schools didn’t let out unless there were 6 inches and still coming down.

Expecting a bad few days here in The Ozarks.

Stocked up with essentials; battery-operated appliances fully charged.

Thinking more about people who have no shelter - especially veterans.

We’re in Atlanta. They are predicting an ice apocalypse here. We went to the grocery store today to stock up. We have a generator, a fireplace and portable heaters that can be plugged into the generator.

Mr. GG2 is talking about wiring a pigtail to a separate box so the blower to our gas furnace can run off the generator. I guess we are about as prepared as you can get. We’re just hoping it won’t be as bad as predicted.

There’s nothing quite like 2 inches of solid ice on everything....

I recall a huge blizzard few years ago in the DC metro area. We were lucky that there was a farm protest on the mall and many tractors were parked there. The tractor owners volunteered to drive across the metro area delivering firefighters, medical professionals, and others to their work places. I recall as a young boy seeing a large tractor picking up a neighbor for such purpose. Carter was president then.

Very cool story, Thanks for sharing.

We were at 30A this time last year and escaped just ahead of it in flurries all thru L.A. (Lower Alabama for those from Rio Linda) to the GA line on I-85, where they ended. So we drove north a year ago to escape the snow. 30A got 6”-8” last year in that, based on the reports from talking to people while back this year.

This year, we drove north to have a few days and then get whatever we get. Reasonably well prepared.

Here is a minor tip.

If a blackout is possible while you are sleeping, then get the extra bedding out now so that you can just reach over and drag some extra blankets or comforter over you and deal with it in the morning.

Stay safe; hopefully it won’t be as bad for any of us as some are predicting.

My husband ‘runs hot’ and even in Winter I usually don’t need more than a bedsheet; but there’s a comforter, in case temps really tank.
