January 2026 Snow Storm

Posted on 01/22/2026 5:14:26 PM PST by Jamestown1630

Nobody seems to have begun a thread for the snowstorm that is forecast for this weekend, so I thought I would.

Where I live (DC Metro area) a big snowstorm is relatively rare. We're the ones who don't really know how to drive in it because we don't get a lot of practice; and we also crowd the grocery store and wipe out the shelves - often for stuff we don't really need, and for a forecast that doesn't amount to much but flurries.

But once in a while, we really get whacked; and I think this may be one of those times. (My husband grew up in the wilds of Pennsylvania, and laughs at what we consider 'getting whacked' down here.)

I'm hoping we get lots of snow, and little or no ice; and hope everyone will be safe.

Let us know what you are doing to prepare, if you live where it might hit.

It’s a brand that makes a lot of whole grain breads; to me, they seem to have a weird texture:

When my kids were in private school the school was clear.

They did not have snow days. The school would be open until noon on snowy days. Parents would use their best judgment. That way the school ticked off a mandatory attendance day and everyone had a snow day off.

Snow has its fun side. Covid didn’t.

I got a tree company to come over at a moments notice and take down one major limb hanging over my carport. There’s a HUGE neighbors tree that leans directly at my house; it’s covered in English Ivy. That tree, I had them take down two MAJOR branches that extend over my property line (I contacted the landlord/owner of the property first, she was cool with it). While I watched them take those down, I actually could see the tree visibly straighten.

Cost a BUNCH but these guys were cool, they didn’t ask for price-gouging / emergency-style pricing; they were efficient and skilled. Can’t say enough about them. Grand Arch Tree Service. Great group. They cover Gainesville, Oakwood, Flowery Branch, Buford... but they may cover other areas if asked.

Well, to be fair, the ice really hasn't started yet.

The tippy-tappy sounds of sleet are now hitting my north-facing windows. A sound rarely heard in these parts. Not loudly, but enough to make the kitties look askance at the windows.

Temps are in the low 20s and headed lower.

My family and friends in the DC area are in the teens now.

Uck. One of the main reasons I moved south after college was to get away from this cold, slippery stuff.

Stay safe, everyone!
