Except for his early SNL career and the first Vacation movie, I've always considered Chevy Chase to be a poor actor and not particularly funny.
And he has a reputation as a jerk. They didn't let him do a skit or appear on stage at the SNL 50 year anniversary show. Apparently a lot of people don't like Chevy Chase and he's difficult to work with.
A clip from the CNN "I'm Chevy Chase and You're Not" special made him look like he was nasty to the female interviewer, telling her she's not intelligent enough to understand him.
Having watched the show, it seemed to me he has been ostracized by the woke entertainment industry due to two complaints from fellow actors. One gay, the other a black woman.
Chevy Chase is known for irreverent humor. He was in a show with a gay guy and made a private joke to him they should do a segment on AIDS where the gay is dying and they weigh him each week. The gay guy claims (and Chase says he's lying) That Chevy came to his trailer crying and begging for forgiveness after this incident.
The other case was a typical liberal blacklisting for using the N word but not in a derogatory manner. Chevy was upset they were having his show character make too many obnoxious statements and he complained "Next they'll have my character call the black cast members (the N word)".
This resulted in a black female demanding that he apologize. He said "for what? " He pointed out that on SNL he and Garrett Morris would call each other the N word all the time. Chase was fired from the show over this.
Pretty sure this nonsense is why they wouldn't let him on the stage for the SNL anniversary show.
He's a crotchetty old man at this point, suffered heart failure and has memory loss. I don't think he's a good actor anymore. Don't know his politics.
I ended up sympathizing with him and feeling he's been canceled by the jerks in Hollywood and New York.
They didn't say it directly but it was strongly implied.
The SNL cast hated him.
He got into a fight with Murray in the hall at NBC Belushi had to break it up.
He was only on Season 1.
I only remember one N word told live in a skit with Richard Pryor who wrote it.
Correct—in fact Ford used his forensic autopsy skills to move one of the bullets in the report on JFK’s body. It was in Ford’s own writing in pen in the draft report.
Lol.
Chevy chase is a known asshole as he has demonstrated over and over in interviews. Its a shame.
“He got into a fight with Murray “
Yes, that fight was reportedly over Chase mocking Murray’s acne scars... which is an incredibly juvenile form of mockery more appropriate to 9th graders than to grown men.
I know a director who got talked into hiring him for something. He said he’ll never make that mistake again.
Chase was in a little known sitcom called Community where he played a bitter old crotchety bigot.
He was real good at it.
“I think that portrayal of Reagan was accurate,”
It wasn’t exactly “accurate”... Reagan wasn’t really speaking fluent Farsi behind closed doors... but the sketch resonated because there was kernel of truth there. The general public knew at some level that the leftist media portrayal of RR as a doddering retired actor who was capable of little more than chatting with Jimmy Stewart about the good ol’ days was wrong. RR was a dead-serious, highly strategic political genius, and most regular folks understood that.
Chevy Chase canceled himself 30 years ago, when he stopped being funny.
Yep
Fletch Lives was funny
But lots of liberal garbage
He even wears a McGovern 72 t-shirt 👕
I would guess that Don Rickles had a solution for that with his put-downs.
Tear one person down, then everyone else leaves him alone?
***Chase was fired from the show over this. ***
Fired? Or a set up for next week’s show and change of cast members.
I remember hearing about him walking off SNL in the middle of a skit, then next Saturday night we see Steve Martin walking in, past Chevy Chase on the street playing a guitar for nickles and dimes.
You get old and y0u get non funny......That’s show biz......
Chevy Chase is 82 years old and has a new worth of $50M. And, yes, he had a huge reputation for being a jerk. I’m not crying too many tears for him.
You answered your own question.
Ford vs. Chevy. Timeless.
Many of us are old enough to remember the treatment of Gerald Ford. Sure, he was no true conservative, but he had a lot more principle and he did serve his country honorably. For the time he served as President, he was universally and relentlessly portrayed as an incompetent klutz.
He was a star athlete in college, and in the USN during WWII, an extra duty assigned to him was being in charge of physical fitness on the ship. Here he was playing basketball on an elevator on the USS Monterey:
And he was no slouch in his service, either.
During Typhoon Cobra in 1944, the USS Monterey was damaged by a fire, which was started by several of the ship's aircraft tearing loose from their cables and colliding during the storm. The ship was afire from stem to stern, and in the very short range TBS (Talk Between Ship) discussion which was the only kind possible during the typhoon, a talker on a passing ship was heard to say "There goes the Monterey...", meaning there was no way she could survive those fires.

(This is actually the USS Langley, nearly twice the displacement of the USS Monterey, so she would have generally rolled LESS than the Monterey...)
During the Typhoon, Ford got off watch and narrowly avoided becoming a casualty himself. After he left his battle station on the bridge of the ship in the early morning of December 18, he went onto the flight deck to get to his quarters faster, and as he did, the ship rolled twenty-five degrees, which caused Ford to lose his footing and slide toward the edge of the deck on the port side of the ship. He slid all the way across the slick flight deck and would have gone over the side to absolute certain death (no ship or launch could have gotten him out of the water) if it had not been for his physical prowess.
As he tobogganed on his rump, scrambling wildly trying to grab onto something, his feet hit a raised steel edge on the flight deck and he catapulted into the air. As he went through the air, he managed to flip and catch hold of a railing as he went over it towards the sea. Pretty astonishing in that sea and light state.
He went back to his rack, but smelled smoke. He got up again and made his way (carefully) to the hanger deck which was completely ablaze, with burning wrecks of planes, engines, and support equipment sliding to and fro in the pitching ship, and went into the inferno with a fire party.
Agree or disagree with his competency as a President or his policies, he deserved far better treatment than he got from the Left.
And Chevy Chase was the popular culture expression of the Leftist ridicule, and was willing and enthusiastic in his ridicule.
He was fired from a later show when a cast member demanded an apology for his “racist” remark that wasn’t racist.
He was a big lib. He wasn’t funny for most of his career after the beginning. But IF anyone watched the CNN show, it was pretty clear that for all his faults he’s been ostracized because a gay and a black made unfair leftist accusations. That’s why in watching the show I found myself (surprisingly) sympathizing with him.
But I’ve also enjoyed everyone here dumping on him.
Bill Murray and he hate each other, so there’s that.
